According to Mr. Phan Nhat Linh (30 years old, in Ho Chi Minh City), an employee of the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the above incident occurred when the bus was passing through Phu Loi Ward, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Binh Duong ). The passenger who had the accident was a 36-year-old man from Tay Ninh. He was sitting 2 rows away from the patient. While the bus was running, he saw the man suddenly convulse his limbs, breathe heavily, then collapse motionless.
“I immediately ran up, introduced myself as a medical worker and asked for permission to perform emergency treatment. When I checked the patient’s carotid pulse, it was almost gone, meaning the patient had stopped breathing,” said Linh.
45 seconds to save a person with cardiac arrest on a bus
The space between the two rows of seats was narrow, making it impossible to lay the patient down for first aid. Mr. Linh was forced to lean the patient against the seat post and perform CPR, while asking two passengers to support the head and body, and another person to hold the victim to create a point of support for balance.

“At that time, I only thought about saving people. I often encountered this situation at the hospital, so I quickly asked for permission to give first aid and then performed CPR on the patient. The space in the car was cramped, and there were no supporting machines. Luckily, after about 45 seconds of continuous CPR, his pulse returned, and I breathed a sigh of relief,” Linh recounted.
The driver immediately drove straight into the emergency gate of a nearby hospital. Security guards helped get the patient out of the car. When they arrived at the hospital, the patient was conscious and able to sit up.
Suspected acute myocardial infarction
Mr. Linh handed over the patient to the emergency team, reported the entire progress, and left. The next day, he was informed that the patient had been discharged and was in stable condition.
Although not directly monitoring the diagnosis results, Mr. Linh determined that the situation that occurred in the car was consistent with acute myocardial infarction leading to sudden cardiac arrest . Correct chest compressions helped restore circulation and save the patient's life.
"See someone in danger then save them"
In response to many complimentary comments on social media, Mr. Linh shared that because he had experience and thought about saving people, he boldly gave first aid to the patient.

According to Mr. Linh, in many developed countries, people are equipped with first aid knowledge and have automatic defibrillators (AEDs) placed in public places. However, the cost of the machines is up to hundreds of millions of dong, making widespread deployment in Vietnam difficult.
Mr. Linh currently works at the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department of a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. He said that his recent act of saving a life was just a professional reflex; he saw someone in critical condition and had to save them. "At that time, I didn't think of anything other than doing the right thing as soon as possible," Mr. Linh shared.
