Should you choose a wireless mouse with a removable battery or one with a built-in battery?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/08/2023

Currently, the market offers two types of wireless mice: those with removable batteries and those with built-in batteries, with not many significant differences. This can make it difficult for users to choose between them. To resolve this issue, the best approach is to understand the key differences between them before making a purchase.

There are two types of wireless mice currently available on the market.

Wireless mouse with removable battery

Battery-powered mice are typically low-end models, with some mid-range options and rarely seen in high-end solutions. Battery-powered models have strengths but also a number of drawbacks.

Advantage Disadvantages

Lightweight: Typically, these mice are geared towards laptops, often using two AAA batteries or one/two AA batteries. A prime example is the Logitech G305 – a gaming mouse that uses a single AA battery with up to 250 hours of battery life and is lighter than other models.

High Pollution: The use of AAA or AA batteries means this type of mouse is highly polluting to the environment, potentially taking up to 500 years to decompose and contaminating soil and water if not recycled. Many people choose not to use this type of mouse because of the potential environmental toxicity it poses, as the batteries can release mercury, lead, cadmium, or lithium.

Excellent battery life: Battery-powered mice typically offer long usage times. This is because they are usually simple mice without RGB lighting and other elements that drain the battery immediately.

Lack of high-end solutions: Most mice that use removable batteries are mid-range, while high-end options are rare. For this segment, it's better to choose a model with an integrated battery.

Affordable: Because they don't have integrated batteries, their price is much lower, as they don't include a charging circuit. However, users will have to spend extra money on batteries each time they need replacing.

Wireless mouse with built-in battery

Another option on the wireless mouse market is the battery-powered type, or rechargeable battery technology. It has its own advantages and disadvantages that users should be aware of before making a choice.

Wireless mice with built-in batteries often have RGB lighting, which consumes a lot of energy.

Advantage

Disadvantages

Improved performance: Because this solution is designed for the mid-range or high-end segment, it often comes with better electronics, sensors, and related technologies.

Short battery life : They typically offer less usage time compared to battery-powered mice. This is because built-in batteries are often small and RGB lighting is usually added. Both of these factors significantly reduce battery life to 100-150 hours.

Less polluting : By offering continuous battery recharging, their batteries won't be quickly discarded. Users can use the mouse for extended periods without any problems.

High price : Battery-powered mice are more expensive due to the accompanying factors. Intended for the mid-range and high-end segments, they often come with more advanced sensors, require specific electronic circuitry for charging, and wireless charging models are particularly more expensive.

Simple charging : When the battery is low, we can simply connect the cable and charge the mouse just like charging a smartphone. Some high-end models even offer wireless charging via a special charging mat.

Battery degradation : Over time, batteries lose their characteristics and capacity. After about 2-3 years, we will begin to notice a decrease in usage time. Unsurprisingly, models with removable batteries don't suffer from these issues.

Which wireless mouse should I choose?

Analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each type requires many considerations, and it's certainly not an easy process. In the case of wireless mice that run on removable batteries, users can also purchase rechargeable batteries. Instead of consuming many batteries and polluting the environment, the batteries can be reused through multiple charge/discharge cycles.
