The landfill in Ha Giang 2 ward is overloaded.

After nearly 25 years of operation, the waste collection and treatment site in Ha Giang 2 ward is in a state of serious overload. Every day, this area receives over 70 tons of waste, equivalent to 138m³, more than 4 times the original design capacity (30-40m³/day and night).

Large amounts of waste are still dumped here every day, causing the landfill to become increasingly overloaded.

The landfill is located at Group 1 Minh Khai, put into use since 2001 with an area of nearly 2 hectares, treated by burial. However, the amount of waste generated is increasing rapidly while recycling technology and machinery are still limited, causing high treatment costs and decreasing efficiency.

Due to its location higher than the residential area, the landfill directly affects the lives of households in Group 1 and Group 2 of Minh Khai. “On sunny days, there are flies, on rainy days, the stench is strong, and wastewater flows down below. Within a radius of 2 km, the stench can still be smelled. People have repeatedly petitioned to close the landfill, but so far it has only stopped at recording” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Cuc, a resident living near the area, expressed her frustration.

In 2010, the province decided to close the landfill, and in 2018 continued to attract investment to build a waste treatment plant using new technology. However, so far, it has not attracted suitable investors, while the amount of waste generated daily continues to increase, creating great pressure on the existing system.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen The Phuong said: “The landfill has been overloaded after many renovations, especially after recent natural disasters. The Department has inspected the site and requested the Ha Giang Urban and Environment Joint Stock Company to implement temporary solutions such as leveling, covering the waste, and draining water. In the long term, the industry is coordinating with the Department of Finance to advise the Provincial People's Committee to select an investor to build a waste treatment area that meets standards, replacing the current landfill.”

If there is no effective solution soon, the prolonged overload situation will continue to pose the risk of water pollution, disease outbreaks, and negatively affect the landscape, urban environment and people's lives.
