According to the Electricity Regulatory Authority ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), in the first six months of 2024, despite facing many challenges such as hot weather and increased peak load and power compared to the same period last year, the electricity supply for socio-economic development and people's needs was still ensured.
In the first six months, the dispatching agency mobilized 86.4 billion kWh from coal-fired power plants (accounting for 56.96% of the total output for the first six months of the year), exceeding the plan by 556 million kWh; oil-fired power plants mobilized 88 million kWh more than planned; and gas-fired power plants mobilized approximately 13.08 billion kWh.
Regarding hydropower, in the first five months of the year, due to poor water inflow, the mobilization of hydropower plants was limited, and water levels in reservoirs were maintained to ensure electricity supply in the North. In June 2024, with favorable hydropower conditions, the mobilized hydropower output exceeded 2.454 billion kWh.
Renewable energy sources mobilized reached 20.67 billion kWh (accounting for approximately 13.63% of total production in the first six months of the year), of which wind energy reached 6.123 billion kWh and solar power reached 13.88 billion kWh.
Speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Deputy Director of the Electricity Regulatory Authority Nguyen The Huu said that, in the long term, to ensure electricity supply for production and daily life, the Electricity and Renewable Energy Department and the Electricity Regulatory Authority have developed a direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) mechanism and submitted it to the Government .
In addition, the Electricity Regulatory Authority will continue to finalize the Circulars on the electricity grid pricing framework, waste, biomass, etc., completing the legal basis for the development of power sources for production and daily life in the coming time.
According to a representative from the Electricity Regulatory Authority, based on the actual load demand in June 2024 and the forecast of socio -economic development in the remaining months of the year, EVN's calculations show that the Northern power system basically meets the load demand; however, the level of reserve capacity from power sources remains low.
In July 2024, with a scenario of prolonged extreme heat, if coal-fired power plants experience malfunctions or reduced capacity, the Northern power system risks running out of reserve capacity. In this case, drastic measures will be implemented to shift load demand between peak hours, while also mobilizing additional diesel generators borrowed from customers to ensure sufficient electricity supply.
During the period from August to December, the reserve capacity of the Northern power system remains low, and power generation units need to continue strictly ensuring the maintenance of available capacity and equipment readiness.
