Decoding why young people without heart disease suddenly have strokes

In a study recently published in the scientific journal Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases , experts have discovered the cause of stroke and, at the same time, predicted the risk of stroke early.

The research team from Central South University and Nanchang Medical University (China) used data from more than 22,615 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) over 19 years.

Participants had their waist circumference and weight measured, and blood drawn for blood sugar and lipid tests. The authors then calculated a TyG-WWI score for each person and compared it to their stroke status.

The results found that people with higher TyG-WWI index had greater risk of stroke.

The TyG-WWI index is a composite of four factors:

  • Blood fat (triglyceride).
  • Blood sugar
  • Weight.
  • Waist

Researchers wanted to assess the association between the TyG-WWI score and stroke risk in adults in the community.

The results found that people with higher TyG-WWI scores had a greater risk of stroke, according to the health news site Eating Well.

Without adjusting for any factors, people with high TyG-WWI had a 65% increased risk of stroke. Adjusting for age and sex, the risk increased by 24%. After adjusting for all relevant factors, the risk still increased by 15%. The next content of this article will be on the health page on September 3 .

Experts reveal the best time to brush your teeth

Brushing your teeth before or after breakfast both have certain effects on your oral health. Depending on your personal time, you can choose one of the two, but you also need to pay attention to a few things.

Brushing your teeth immediately after waking up helps remove plaque and bacteria that have accumulated overnight. It also helps to pre-coat the enamel with fluoride, protecting teeth from acids from food. Brushing also stimulates saliva production immediately, which helps the mouth fight harmful bacteria and neutralize acids.

Use a soft-bristled brush, hold it at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line, and brush gently to avoid damaging tooth enamel.

Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum also helps stimulate saliva production after meals.

Meanwhile, dentist Susanne Kölare Jeffrey, clinical associate professor of restorative dentistry at the University of Washington (USA), said brushing teeth after breakfast helps remove starch and sugar left on teeth, preventing them from feeding bacteria.

“If I had to choose, I would definitely choose brushing my teeth after breakfast,” Dr. Jeffrey shared.

However, brushing your teeth immediately after eating can damage your tooth enamel. The general recommendation is that if you choose to eat breakfast before brushing, you should wait 30-60 minutes to give your saliva time to remove acids from food and help restore tooth enamel.

“During that time, people can rinse their mouths thoroughly with clean water to remove some of the plaque, helping the acidity in the mouth return to a neutral state,” advised Dr. Peter Arsenault, professor at the School of Dentistry - Tufts University (USA). Who should be careful of oral cancer?

Oral cancer usually occurs on the lips, tongue, inner cheeks, gums, roof of the mouth, or floor of the mouth. It can occur at any age. However, it is more common in older people and those who use certain substances.

Common symptoms of oral cancer include persistent mouth ulcers that do not heal, white or red patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue, mouth pain, difficulty swallowing, and a feeling of having something in the mouth. As the disease progresses, the patient will experience unexplained weight loss, bad breath, and a lump in the neck due to swollen lymph nodes.

Drinking a lot of alcohol is one of the major risk factors leading to oral cancer.

The following groups need to pay attention to the warning signs of oral cancer.

Tobacco use. Tobacco use is the most important risk factor for oral cancer. Whether it is cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or chewing tobacco, tobacco use significantly increases the risk of oral tissue mutations that lead to cancer. Studies show that tobacco users have a six times higher risk of oral cancer than non-users.

Cancer Research UK says cigarette smoke contains more than 70 cancer-causing chemicals that damage DNA, causing cells to mutate and develop into cancer.

Drinking too much alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol is another major risk factor for oral cancer. Alcohol irritates the lining of the mouth, making it easier for carcinogens to damage oral tissue. Therefore, combining alcohol with tobacco significantly increases the risk of oral cancer.

People with HPV infection. Human papillomavirus (HPV), especially HPV type 16, is an increasingly common cause of nasopharyngeal cancer. The nasopharynx is the area at the back of the throat, right at the base of the tongue and the tonsils.

This cancer risk is often detected in young adults. Oral cancer caused by HPV tends to appear in places that are difficult to detect early, such as the base of the tongue or the back of the throat. Start your day with health news to see more of this article!
