This summer, from urban to rural areas, children's sports activities are quite vibrant with diverse content, meeting their needs for recreation, entertainment, and learning. These playgrounds provide children and students with excellent opportunities to improve their health, develop their intellect and physical strength, and acquire knowledge and life skills to protect themselves, prevent accidents and injuries, and develop their athletic talents.

Helping children develop their talents.

This summer, regularly at 5:30 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, 32 children from Gio Mai commune, Gio Linh district, enthusiastically gather at the Gio Mai Kindergarten playground to train at the Gio Mai Taekwondo Club. This is also the joy and passion of Ms. Truong Thi Hien, the club's leader, as she has long cherished the idea of creating an environment for local children to train and develop their athletic talents during the summer break from their studies.

Ms. Hien shared: “When I was young, I loved martial arts but didn't have the opportunity to study them for many reasons. After graduating with a degree in Taekwondo from the Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, I returned to work in Quang Tri. During this time, I noticed that many children and students in Gio Mai commune had to travel long distances to Dong Ha City during the summer break to learn martial arts. Understanding the difficulties and disadvantages faced by children far from sports training centers, I decided to open a martial arts class for them right in my hometown. Although it's still quite new, the class has received enthusiastic support from parents. The club will strive to maintain this class so that the children have a practical and meaningful playground during the summer.”

In many localities within the province, organizing sports training for children right where they live has created favorable conditions for them, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to Duong Quoc Ninh, Deputy Director of the Vinh Linh District Center for Culture, Sports and Tourism, summer sports activities for children in Vinh Linh district are rich and diverse from the district level to the grassroots, attracting a large number of young people to participate.

Notably, the Binh Minh Badminton Club (Ho Xa town) organized summer training for 36 children. The club's goal is to provide systematic badminton training for students, cultivating key players for the district's badminton movement to participate in provincial-level competitions.

In particular, this summer, many dedicated organizations, sports clubs, and individuals have launched numerous free volleyball and swimming classes for children in disadvantaged and impoverished areas. This helps these children access sports and provides them with a platform to develop their talents.

For example, the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Linh district, in coordination with the Safe Swimming Project (Swim for life), organized free swimming lessons for approximately 160 students at Vinh Giang Primary School.

Thai Duong Anh, a student at Vinh Giang Primary School, happily said: “I really wanted to learn to swim, but where I used to live, there were no swimming pools or swimming classes. When I heard about the free swimming lessons at Vinh Giang Primary School, I asked my parents to register me. Thanks to the dedicated instructors, I can now swim and feel more confident when I'm alone in the water. I will try to practice more diligently so I can have the opportunity to participate in school swimming competitions.”

Mr. Duong Quoc Ninh himself has directly opened a free volleyball class for 25 underprivileged children who are passionate about volleyball, teaching them at the outdoor court of the district's sports training center. From this class, it is hoped that the children will develop their playing style and confidence, and become outstanding athletes of school sports in Vinh Linh district.

Rich and diverse activities

Prior to the summer of 2024, many agencies, units, and sports clubs in the province announced plans to organize classes in sports such as football, volleyball, badminton, swimming, chess, tennis, sports dance, Zumba, etc., with a commitment to ensuring the quality of teaching as well as facilities, equipment, and sports tools to support training and competition for children. This has made it easier for parents and children/students to choose suitable sports.

As is customary, every summer, the Provincial Children's House is the ideal destination for organizing sports activities for children and students. According to Nguyen The Hung, Director of the Provincial Children's House: “This summer, the Provincial Children's House has invested in upgrading and repairing facilities to better meet the needs of teaching and learning; strengthening coordination and creating conditions for teachers and coaches to teach sports and talent-based subjects more effectively in their teaching, training, and development of children.”

The provincial Children's House has created many safe and healthy playgrounds, helping children acquire knowledge and life skills, prevent accidents and injuries, and develop their health and talents. We and the parents always care about and create the best conditions for the children to realize their dreams and aspirations.”

As a foundation for summer activities in 2024, the Provincial Children's House has done a good job maintaining and developing 6 classes teaching and nurturing sports talents for children such as karate-do, Mai Han traditional martial arts, aerobics, zumba, chess, and table tennis, with more than 600 students participating.

According to reporters, the cultural, sports, and physical education centers in districts, towns, and cities, as well as schools throughout the province, have opened many classes to teach and cultivate sports talents in a variety of disciplines. This facilitates students in choosing a suitable sport to improve their health, stay away from video games and social vices, and have more opportunities to develop their physical, intellectual, and artistic talents.

Summer sports activities in 2024 also saw active participation from sports clubs, who implemented training in various disciplines, organized internal exchanges and competitions, or sent students to participate in sports tournaments within and outside the province.

Notably, the Dong Le Chess Club, under the dedicated leadership of Mr. Nguyen Truc, has built a strong reputation in chess training over the past two years. In particular, the club successfully organized two chess tournaments, attracting hundreds of athletes from Quang Tri and the Central region. Mr. Nguyen Truc stated that the club provides chess lessons for approximately 60 children during the summer.

Besides teaching from basic to advanced levels, the club also organizes many internal competitions and takes the children to participate in competitions in Central Vietnam. Participating in diverse activities brings joy and excitement to the children, while also helping them gain experience in practical competition and improve their performance in tournaments.

To date, sports activities for children in the province have been diverse and effectively organized, creating a safe, healthy, and beneficial learning environment. The joint efforts of many dedicated organizations and individuals have provided excellent opportunities for children to improve their health, have fun, and develop their talents, contributing to a rewarding summer for students.
