Recently, a touching handwritten letter from Tran Bang Nhi (a 7th-grade student at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, Vu Quang district, Ha Tinh province) requesting a scholarship for a male classmate from a disadvantaged background to continue his education went viral on social media.
The touching handwritten letter from student Bang Nhi.
The letter, written in beautiful handwriting, read: "Hello Uncle! My name is Tran Bang Nhi, I'm in 7th grade this year at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, Vu Quang town, Ha Tinh province. First of all, I wish you and your family good health and much happiness!"
Today I want to share the story of a classmate of mine and I hope you can help me!
That's Pham Quang Hoai, he's my classmate. Last year, I came home and asked my mother, "Why does he seem so sad? He sometimes cries, Mom!" My mother said, "Hoai didn't live with me when he was little, and his father is sick. He's been raised by his paternal grandparents since he was a baby. You should help and encourage him."
We've been friends for two years, and our homeroom teacher has been very helpful in our studies. But, Uncle, two months ago, her grandfather, who is over 70 years old, was diagnosed with cancer. Things are already difficult, and now they're facing even greater hardship. With her father and grandmother unable to work, I fear that the hope for her and her brother to continue attending school will gradually fade away without anyone to help them.
"I'm very worried about Hoai. She needs not only emotional support but also material assistance. If you can help, I believe your support will make Hoai feel more secure in her studies. I hope you will read my message, and I believe you will find a way to help Hoai! Thank you very much!"

Nhi said that through studying and learning about her friend's circumstances, she empathized with the loss and hardships her friend has been facing. Therefore, she wrote the letter to her uncle, Hoang Trong Thuy - Head Representative of the Zhi Shan Foundation (a non-governmental organization with projects supporting healthcare and education for disadvantaged children in many countries, including Vietnam) in Hue, to ask for help in ensuring Pham Quang Hoai can continue attending school.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Hien (Bang Nhi's mother) said she was very surprised by her daughter's meaningful act.
"I didn't think my child's letter would receive so much attention and be shared by so many people on social media," Ms. Hien said.
According to Ms. Hien, Nhi and Hoai were both classmates and neighbors, so they often played together. Hoai's family is struggling; she has two siblings. Her father suffers from schizophrenia, and her mother left to remarry a long time ago. The two siblings live with their father and paternal grandparents.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Thanh, Principal of Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, said that upon learning the contents of Bang Nhi's letter, the school was deeply moved and appreciated her heartfelt feelings towards her friend.
"Currently, Hoai has been granted a tuition fee waiver, and after the letter went viral, kind-hearted people have promised to support her. In addition, a media agency in the Central and Central Highlands regions has decided to provide Hoai with 500,000 VND and 10kg of rice each month to help her continue pursuing her dreams," Mr. Thanh informed.
According to Mr. Thanh, knowing the difficult circumstances of Hoai and her siblings, the school always creates opportunities and prioritizes giving them gifts whenever there are generous donors supporting students in the school.
