Recently, the Hanoi People's Committee issued a decision approving the technical assistance project document "Research on the renovation of Long Bien Bridge" using non-refundable aid from the economic agency of the French Embassy in Vietnam through the FASEP Fund of the French Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The project has a total investment of nearly 20 billion VND, a construction period of 11 months, and is expected to be completed in 2025.
The project consists of three components: surveying and data collection; analysis and evaluation; and proposing short-term solutions for the renovation and repair of Long Bien Bridge to ensure traffic safety. Following this, the relevant units will research and propose a plan for the future use of the bridge after the national railway line across it ceases operation and it is handed over to the Hanoi People's Committee for management.

According to representatives of the Hanoi People's Committee, Long Bien Bridge is one of the iconic landmarks, a historical symbol and an integral part of Hanoi's landscape for over a century. The project aims to provide solutions to ensure structural safety and other future uses of Long Bien Bridge, such as ensuring the safety of people and vehicles using the structure, including railways, motorbikes, and pedestrians.
Hanoi assigns the Department of Transport (the project owner) the legal responsibility for the accuracy and legality of the information and data presented in the revised project documents; and for organizing and managing the implementation of the investment project to ensure compliance with the regulations of the law, the city, and the donor.
As requested by the city government, units are required to manage and utilize public investment funds economically and efficiently, preventing losses and waste.
The Long Bien Bridge was built between 1898 and 1902, designed and constructed by the French company Daydé & Pillé. With a total length of 2,290 meters, the Long Bien Bridge was once among the longest bridges in the world , second only to the Brooklyn Bridge across the East River in the United States. Having existed for over a century, Long Bien Bridge has witnessed many important historical events of the nation, especially during the two wars of resistance against France and the United States. The bridge has been damaged many times by bombs and bullets, but it has always been repaired and continues to be used, becoming a symbol of Hanoi. Currently, Long Bien Bridge is a vital railway transportation artery, connecting rail transport with the northern provinces. Besides railway vehicles, only motorbikes and bicycles are permitted to cross Long Bien Bridge. |
