These days, within the framework of the Vietnam Festival taking place in Lorient - a city in the West of France, the documentary "Hands that keep the fire of tradition" about 5 Vietnamese craft villages, shown at the Cineville cinema, has attracted a large number of French audiences to watch when the cinema room is often full.

Previously, within the framework of Vietnam Week taking place in Saint-Herblain city at the end of June, this film was also screened at Lutetia cinema with a large audience.

This is a special event within the framework of activities to promote Vietnamese culture in France, part of the community project and international cultural exchange Toucher Arts organized by the Art Space Association, in conjunction with a number of associations and town halls of the two above-mentioned cities.

“Hands that keep the fire of tradition” was made by talented young Vietnamese living in many countries. The film follows the journey through 5 typical craft villages of Vietnam, including Chuong village conical hats, Bat Trang ceramics, Chang Son paper fans, Thach Xa bamboo dragonflies and Dong Ho folk paintings.

In the film, stories about the history of the craft village, the attachment and dedication to the profession, or the ups and downs that artisans encounter in the digital age... are all told through the multidimensional and creative perspectives of young filmmakers, successfully depicting the connection between many generations of artisans and cultural heritage and tradition.

What is special is that all stages of the film's production were carried out by Vietnamese and Vietnamese-origin teenagers aged 13-17 living in France, Australia and Vietnam.

From script ideas, pre-production, filming, character interviews to subtitling and translation, the children do everything themselves with determination, passion and effort to tell the story of their homeland's cultural heritage to the world .

Speaking after watching the film, Mr. Fabrice Loher - Mayor of Lorient city, said: "The film is wonderful, giving me a new perspective on Vietnam. While Vietnam's big cities are moving towards globalization and modernization, preserving traditional values needs to be promoted. This film has helped us better understand traditional Vietnamese craft villages. I really understand the efforts you have made to preserve and develop traditional craft villages through this film, because culture is an important door to open to the world."

Ms. Françoise Giroud, a resident of Lorient, also shared her thoughts: "I came here because I wanted to learn about your country Vietnam through the film. I was amazed by the talent of the film crew. This is a great film and I hope to see more films like this in the future."

According to Mr. Guy Gazan - Deputy Mayor of Lorient city, the film has high artistic quality, carefully selected images, very good camera angles and lighting arrangements.

"Through the film, I learned a lot of new knowledge about Vietnamese craft villages and that made me want to go to Vietnam to experience these interesting things myself," he said.

“I really enjoyed the film, especially the part about the fan-making village,” said Sarah Ea, who lives in Saint-Herblain. “The Dong Ho paintings are also very beautiful. For me, the film is very interesting because it talks about things I never knew.”

Nghiem Pham Phuc Anh - a student at VinUni University and a member of the film crew, expressed his pride that for two consecutive years, the film he participated in filming has been shown on the big screen in many cities in France. Many viewers after watching the film told Phuc Anh that they wanted to come to Vietnam to experience for themselves what was told in the film.

The five craft villages are five separate stories, but all share a common effort to demonstrate the strong vitality of traditional culture. The journey of "Hands that Keep the Fire of Tradition" is no longer just the story of artisans who have devoted their lives to the craft village, but also a meaningful intersection of generations, where there is the companionship of young people with a love for national culture and a strong desire. They are young filmmakers, who act as bridges and use the language of contemporary cinema to tell the story of heritage, thereby spreading the beauty of Vietnamese culture to international friends.

In parallel with the film screening, French audiences can also experience the handicraft villages illustrated in the film through completely free workshops at the exhibition “Brilliant Vietnam” at the National Convention Center in Lorient city within the framework of the Vietnam Festival on July 5.

Participants can create their own items such as paper fans, Dong Ho paintings, bamboo dragonflies, etc., thereby helping them gain a deeper understanding of the stages of creating Vietnamese handicrafts and their cultural values./.
