Laughter abounds as comedians celebrate the Year of the Dragon

Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động08/02/2024

From February 4th to 8th (corresponding to the 25th to 29th of the 12th lunar month), the "On the Boat, Under the Wharf" program, designed to float on the Tau Hu Canal, brings together many comedy groups alongside singers, actors, traditional opera performers, and folk music groups.

Comedy groups including Kieu Oanh, Tan Hoang, Hoang Map, Phuong Dung, Phi Phung, Thuy Muoi, Huu Nghia, Tung Linh, Mai Dung, Phuong Binh… received enthusiastic support from many viewers who enjoy satirical comedy stories.

With the theme "Spring of Love - Tet of Reunion," the Tet Flower Festival at Tao Dan Park (Ho Chi Minh City), taking place from February 6th to 15th (corresponding to the 27th day of the 12th lunar month to the 6th day of Tet), will feature the participation of many popular artists.

Comedians Thanh Dong, Thy Nhung, and Dung Nhi celebrate the new year.

For the first time, Ho Chi Minh City Television will broadcast simultaneously on HTV7 and HTV9 from the 1st to the 4th day of Tet (Lunar New Year) with many artistic programs, including the participation of comedians.

People's Artist Ngoc Giau expressed that this is an opportunity for comedians and comedy groups to refresh themselves, participate in a cultural space rich in Vietnamese identity, and enjoy the vibrant images of people from all walks of life celebrating the Lunar New Year.

"Unlike before, comedy scripts, even those only 20 to 30 minutes long, must be meticulously crafted, with stories conveying positive messages. In general, comedy groups must invest properly, unlike the days of just talking nonsense," said People's Artist Ngoc Giau.

Comedy game shows are booming.

Experts predict that 2024 will be a year of explosive resurgence for game shows, with comedy game shows dominating. Meritorious Artist Minh Nhi believes this will be a fierce competition among comedy groups, and that neglecting script investment will lead to failure in this competition.

Meritorious Artist Lê Thiện believes that the news that the producers of "Beautiful Sister Riding the Waves" have acquired the production rights for "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" (English title "Call Me by Fire"), and that filming will begin in June 2024, has surprised audiences.

"Currently, there have been over 1,000 comments and interactions on the fanpage. That's a positive response. Many famous male singers such as Noo Phuoc Thinh, Hoang Hai, Do Hieu, Anh Tu… have been nominated by the audience for the program. And the list also includes nominations for comedians Xuan Bac, Tu Long, Huy Khanh, Tan Hoang..." - Meritorious Artist Le Thien informed.

Right during the 2024 Lunar New Year, the game show "7 Nụ Cười Xuân" (7 Spring Smiles), featuring comedians, will be a must-watch program (broadcast from February 11th to the 2nd day of the Year of the Dragon on HTV7 channel).

People's Artist Thanh Nam believes that reality TV shows and game shows featuring comedians are currently the focus of attention. He argues that many programs this past year lacked investment in scriptwriting, and if left to the whims of anyone creating comedy, the quality will decline.

"I believe that entertainment game shows in 2024 will feature many comedians and comedy groups from Ho Chi Minh City. This diversity will give audiences who love laughter more choices in entertainment," said People's Artist Thanh Nam.

Comedian My Chi believes that, in addition to investing in scripts and staging, game shows need to include more new talents to avoid becoming boring.

"Today's audience is very discerning; they watch and switch channels as soon as many programs air, but the comedic faces are too old, constantly repeating familiar faces, while the number of young actors is growing and many of them are very talented. We should create opportunities for them," comedian My Chi expressed.

Easy laughter on the internet.

Mr. Ton That Can - Standing Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, a member of the Art Council of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, who reviews comedy programs - said: "Towards the end of the year, we reviewed a grand music festival at the Trong Dong stage, which had four comedy sketches, and all four featured characters who cross-dressed or were homosexual. This is something to avoid when over-exploiting comedic characters who use physical comedy to evoke laughter."

Experts believe that in 2024, entertainment television programs and stage shows that want to survive need to be systematically invested in, from scriptwriting to staging.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports and the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association need to organize the acceptance of comedy scripts before the groups stage them. The outline of each skit must be reviewed, commented on, and revised before being approved for public performance.

People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc asserted that comedy skits by groups, even those featuring famous stars, will gradually be eliminated if they are of poor quality. 2024 will be a year of competition among comedians and comedy groups. "The important thing is that the skits need to be seriously staged and relatable to real life, with stories that carry humanistic meaning. Comedians need to be aware of their responsibility to create laughter that has a significant impact on the audience, especially young people," People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc emphasized.

Comedian Kieu Mai Ly believes that laughter on the internet today also needs to be monitored because too much vulgarity is appearing.

"Currently, the internet exploits cheap humor, comedians relentlessly pursue low-quality acts in game shows, and make unrestrained statements... these are issues that need to be addressed by those in charge," said artist Kieu Mai Ly.
