Instead of taking about 7 years to obtain a B1/B2 certificate in aircraft maintenance techniques, students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology only need 4 years.
On March 5th, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH) signed a cooperation agreement with Vietnam Airlines and Vietnam Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (VAECO) on training in Aviation Engineering for the period 2024-2026.
According to the agreement, after completing their 3-year program with 180 credits at the university, USTH Aeronautical Engineering students will spend an additional 10 months studying and practicing at VAECO to obtain a B1/B2 certificate in aircraft maintenance techniques.
VAECO is currently the only organization approved by the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority to provide B1/B2 level training and certification in Vietnam. USTH is also the only university that collaborates in training this program.
Mr. Pham Minh Hiep, Deputy General Director of VAECO, said that this means students at the school only need about 4 years to obtain both a bachelor's degree and a B1/B2 certificate. Normally, students have to spend 5 years studying at school and then two more years of training at a company to get the certificate.
"Therefore, studying Aerospace Engineering at USTH takes less than three years, saving time. This model is beneficial for both businesses and students, saving costs for society," Mr. Hiep said.
Possessing a B1/B2 certificate increases job opportunities and salary for recent graduates. Speaking to VnExpress in May 2023, Mr. Ta Minh Trong, Head of the Flight Safety Standards Department, Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, stated that personnel in the aviation engineering industry receive a salary of 15-20 million VND per month with basic qualifications. Those with a B1/B2 certificate and the ability to sign off on completed maintenance work can earn up to 50 million VND, or even higher.

The Aeronautical Engineering program at USTH was established in 2018 with financial support from Airbus Group; in comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam Airlines and VAECO, the French Aerospace Institute (IAS/Bricks), and a consortium of more than 30 French universities and research institutes. The goal is to train high-quality human resources in the field of aircraft maintenance and repair, meeting the strong development of Vietnam's aviation industry.
To date, USTH has trained six cohorts of Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering graduates. VAECO recruited 15 students for its first graduating class.
"The number isn't large, but the quality is excellent. They are considered to be proficient in foreign languages and have strong professional skills," Mr. Pham Minh Hiep shared.
Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines and Chairman of the VAECO Board of Members, believes this is a prime example of cooperation between businesses and schools. This helps students gain experience in a real-world environment and access new technologies.
"I believe that with the development of the aviation industry, especially with the Long Thanh airport, the demand for human resources will increase, and the cooperation will last longer and expand in scope, aiming to build programs that are increasingly relevant to reality to increase job opportunities for students," Mr. Thang said.
