On August 20th, a video clip showing a car catching fire in Hanoi went viral on social media. As the flames intensified, a bus driver rushed over and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
The incident was shared on many traffic-related forums. Hundreds of social media users left comments praising the male driver for his decisive and timely action in assisting others on the road.
According to initial information, the driver in the video is Nguyen Van Xuyen (a Vinbus driver). Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Xuyen said the incident occurred at noon on August 17th.
At this time, the male driver was operating the bus on a route from Smart City urban area (Nam Tu Liem district) to the Hanoi Government Office Complex (Tay Ho district).
At approximately 11:00 AM that same day, the bus was nearing the end of the Thang Long Boulevard service road. Upon reaching the intersection of Ring Road 3 and Thang Long Boulevard, the male driver noticed a car on fire. Flames erupted from the underside of the vehicle, causing panic among the two occupants, who were unsure what to do. At this time, traffic in the area was experiencing a localized congestion.
"Seeing that no one was helping them, I immediately thought of the fire extinguisher on the bus, so I quickly told the conductor that I would get down to help," Xuyen said, adding that he then steered the bus to the front, placed a warning sign, and asked passengers for their understanding that their journey might be delayed.
Then, the driver and his assistant quickly got out. They used up the first fire extinguisher, but the flames continued to rage. While Mr. Xuyen was fighting the fire, the driver managed to run back to the cabin to retrieve his phone and personal documents.
It was only when Mr. Xuyen brought down the second large fire extinguisher that the fire was brought under control.
"I only had time to hear them say thank you before I quickly drove on," added Mr. Nguyen Van Xuyen.
On August 20th, when the video of the incident was shared on many traffic-related forums, the driver said that what made him happiest was that no one was injured in the accident. "As a driver, I would definitely help people in need on the road. Especially since I have the means to do so," he added.
Speaking further with Tuoi Tre Online , the commander of Road Traffic Police Team No. 6 (Traffic Police Department of Hanoi Police) confirmed the incident and stated that there were no casualties after the accident.
Police quickly arrived to assist those involved in the incident, resolve the situation, and direct traffic through the area.
