Professor Vo Tong Xuan's funeral will take place in Can Tho.

On the afternoon of August 19, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, Principal of Can Tho University, said that the funeral of Professor Dr. Vo Tong Xuan will take place in Can Tho.

"The professor's funeral will be jointly organized by the An Giang Provincial Party Committee and the Can Tho City Party Committee," Mr. Tinh informed, adding that the location will be at the Can Tho City Funeral Home (No. 30A Mau Than, Ninh Kieu District).

According to Mr. Tinh, the body of Professor Vo Tong Xuan is expected to be brought back to Can Tho on the evening of August 19. The organizing committee has not yet announced a specific time for the funeral.

Professor Dr. Vo Tong Xuan was born in 1940 in An Giang. He was a National Assembly delegate for the 7th, 8th and 9th terms.

He is known as a leading expert, with many contributions in the field of science and agricultural research in Vietnam, as well as supporting food security issues for countries in the region.

In 2023, Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan received the VinFuture Prize (one of the most valuable annual science and technology prizes in the world), with a special prize for scientists from developing countries.

He is the first Vietnamese scientist to receive this award.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan was honored for his important contributions to the invention and dissemination of disease-resistant rice varieties, contributing to strengthening global food security.

At 7am this morning, August 19, Professor Xuan passed away in Ho Chi Minh City after a period of serious illness.

During his career, Professor Vo Tong Xuan held the following positions:

- 1982-1997: Vice Principal of Can Tho University

- 12/1999-11/2007: Principal of An Giang University

- 1996-2006: Member of the State Council of Professors of Vietnam

- 1/2008-2010: General Director of Viet - Phi Agricultural and Aquatic Products Company Limited

- 2010-10/2013: Principal of Tan Tao University

Since 2013: Founding Council and Acting Rector of Nam Can Tho University

Before passing away, Professor Vo Tong Xuan was the honorary principal of Nam Can Tho University.
