The funeral of Professor Vo Tong Xuan will take place in Can Tho.

On the afternoon of August 19th, in an interview with Dan Tri newspaper, Associate Professor Tran Trung Tinh, Rector of Can Tho University, stated that the funeral of Professor Vo Tong Xuan will take place in Can Tho.

"The professor's funeral will be jointly organized by the An Giang Provincial Party Committee and the Can Tho City Party Committee," Mr. Tinh informed, adding that the event will take place at the Can Tho City Funeral Home (30A Mau Than Street, Ninh Kieu District).

According to Mr. Tinh, the remains of Professor Vo Tong Xuan are expected to be brought back to Can Tho on the evening of August 19th. The organizing committee has not yet announced a specific date for the funeral.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan was born in 1940 in An Giang. He was a National Assembly delegate of the 7th, 8th and 9th terms.

He is known as a leading expert with many contributions to the field of science and agricultural research in Vietnam, as well as supporting food security issues for countries in the region.

In 2023, Professor Vo Tong Xuan received the VinFuture Award (one of the most prestigious annual science and technology awards in the world), in the special category for scientists from developing countries.

He is the first Vietnamese scientist to receive this award.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan was honored for his important contributions to the invention and dissemination of disease-resistant rice varieties, contributing to strengthening global food security.

Professor Xuan passed away in Ho Chi Minh City at 7:00 AM this morning, August 19th, after a period of serious illness.

During his career, Professor Vo Tong Xuan held the following positions:

- 1982-1997: Vice Principal of Can Tho University

- December 1999 - November 2007: Rector of An Giang University

- 1996-2006: Member of the State Council for Professor Titles of Vietnam

- 1/2008-2010: General Director of Viet - Phi Agricultural and Aquatic Products Company Limited

- 2010-10/2013: Principal of Tan Tao University

Since 2013: Founding Council and Acting Rector of Can Tho University

Before passing away, Professor Vo Tong Xuan was the honorary principal of Nam Can Tho University.
