Le Quy Dong was an outstanding cultural figure of Vietnam.

For over 30 years as an official, he was always highly valued by the Le-Trinh court and placed in important positions, the highest being the Left Commander (acting as Prime Minister). With the ambition to govern the country and benefit the people, Le Quy Don always wished to implement reforms and establish laws to restore order so that the country would be stable, prosperous, and the people could enjoy peace and tranquility.

Not only within Vietnam, but the period in which researchers frequently mention Le Quy Don's outstanding contributions is his diplomatic mission to China (1760-1762).

During this trip, Le Quy Don interacted with many renowned scholars, persuading them about the culture and civilization of Vietnam, while also gathering knowledge from different civilizations, broadening his understanding of the world . His achievements during this diplomatic mission not only affirmed the value of national culture but also contributed to enriching his own knowledge, laying the foundation for his later research works.

Amidst the rebellion of rebellious soldiers, the court was in utter turmoil, and the people were suffering from famine, Le Quy Don fell seriously ill. He then requested to return to his mother's village, Nguyen Xa (Duy Tien district, Ha Nam province), for treatment, but to no avail. He died in 1784 at the age of 58.

Deeply saddened by the loss of such a talented and virtuous man, Lord Trịnh Tông proposed to King Lê Hiển Tông that the court be suspended for three days and that Bùi Huy Bích be appointed to preside over the funeral. At the same time, he posthumously bestowed upon Lê Quý Đôn the title of Minister of Public Works. When King Lê Chiêu Thống assumed power, he was granted the title of Duke of Dĩnh.

In the eulogy read at the funeral of Le Quy Don, Grand Chancellor Bui Huy Bich, both on behalf of the Le-Trinh court and on behalf of generations of students who had studied under Le Quy Don, wrote: “His knowledge was profound, his literary talent outstanding, he was the most intelligent of his time, and he wrote tirelessly. In the last two hundred years, our country has only had one person like him…”

With his achievements and contributions, his name has been given to many specialized high schools and other high schools in Vietnam, as a source of motivation for generations of students to strive, work hard, and emulate, including Le Quy Don Specialized High School in Da Nang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Dinh, Dien Bien, Khanh Hoa, Lai Chau, Ninh Thuan, and Quang Tri.
