Báo Gia LaiBáo Gia Lai18/05/2023

(GLO) - With the theme "From the heart of each of us - Working together to build a compassionate community," the 2023 Humanitarian Month has reached its halfway point. With the joint efforts of organizations and individuals, compassion has spread and helped those in difficult circumstances with practical gifts and actions.

Practical and meaningful activities

During this year's Humanitarian Month, in addition to giving gifts, various units also coordinated to organize medical examinations for people in remote areas and ethnic minority communities. Recently, on May 13th, the Provincial Red Cross Society, in coordination with the Chư Păh District Red Cross Society, provided free medical examinations, medicine, and gifts to poor and disadvantaged households in Hòa Phú commune. The program distributed 50 gift packages to the poor and provided free medical examinations and medicine to 250 people, with a total cost of 65 million VND. The funding for the program came from the regular budget of the Provincial Red Cross Society and from other mobilized resources.

Ms. Alin (from Boi village) said: "My family is classified as near-poor, with unstable income and difficult living conditions, so we rarely go for medical check-ups. Hearing that a team of doctors from the province was coming to examine and provide medicine to the villagers, I brought my three young children to the clinic. The program has helped poor people get check-ups to know their health status and receive timely treatment if they are sick," Ms. Alin said.

Speaking with us, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hao, Vice Chairman of the Hoa Phu Commune People's Committee, said: The commune has nearly 1,700 households, including 474 ethnic minority households. Currently, the commune still has 43 poor households, accounting for 2.53%; and 206 near-poor households, accounting for 12.1%. In recent times, the local government has implemented many solutions to support people in overcoming poverty. However, the number of poor and near-poor households remains high. In particular, the commune still has 9 households facing housing difficulties. Therefore, the commune hopes for more assistance from the community so that people can have better conditions to improve their lives.

Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong, Chairwoman of the Red Cross Society of Chu Pah district, informed: "The local goal is to donate approximately 600 gift packages (each worth over 700,000 VND) during the Humanitarian Month. In addition to gift giving, the Society also mobilizes benefactors to provide livelihood support; organizes free medical examinations and provides free medicine… To date, we have donated 650 gift packages, exceeding the target, and we continue to strive to raise more practical and meaningful gifts for the poor."

Striving to assist 25,000 people in need.

During this year's Humanitarian Month, the Mang Yang District Red Cross Society aims to assist 1,000 disadvantaged individuals with a total value of 300 million VND; and mobilize donations of 200 gift packages for those in need. Chairman of the District Red Cross Society, Ngo Gia Linh, shared: “Although we are only a little over halfway through, we have already mobilized organizations and individuals to exceed the set target. The Society will continue to mobilize resources to provide more meaningful programs and gifts to help poor and disadvantaged households in the district.”

Mr. Cao Xuan Nam, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Society, informed: The Humanitarian Month is organized widely throughout the province, integrating diverse forms of activities to increase impact and spread to all levels of the population, ensuring practicality and community focus. The target set for the 2023 Humanitarian Month is for all levels of the Red Cross Society in the province to strive to mobilize resources reaching 5.5 billion VND to assist 25,000 people in difficult circumstances. Of this, districts, towns, and cities will implement at least 3 humanitarian projects, and the province will mobilize resources to implement 1 humanitarian project worth at least 150 million VND. The goal is to donate over 6,000 gifts to households in difficult circumstances during the first peak week of the Humanitarian Month. Free medical examinations and medication will be provided to 1,000 people.

In addition, over 1,300 units of safe blood were collected through propaganda, mobilization, and reception. Furthermore, the campaign "Each organization, each individual is linked to a humanitarian cause" was effectively implemented, with each district, town, and city striving to establish 20-30 humanitarian causes, organizing and coordinating support from organizations and individuals in a sustainable manner. The various levels of the Association implemented a series of intensive activities to assist the poor, those in difficult circumstances, and vulnerable people, focusing on supporting the target groups of the two key programs: Safety for poor and disadvantaged fishermen and Nutrition for poor and disabled children.
