According to the book Khâm định Việt sử thông giám cương mục, the Dinh and Le dynasties used to call Thanh Hoa Ai Chau. In the second year of Thien Thanh (1029) during the Ly dynasty, it was changed to Thanh Hoa Phu.
From the 10th year of the Quang Thuan era of the Later Le Dynasty, King Le Thanh Tong changed Thanh Hoa province to Thanh Hoa province.
