Primary school teachers in Ho Chi Minh City teach using technology, students 'learn while playing, play while being good'

No more blackboards and chalk, many teachers in Ho Chi Minh City are incorporating technology into every lesson: from learning games, illustrative videos to digital libraries.

Teacher Nguyen Huu Tri, Phu Tho Primary School, uses ChatGPT and Gemini to 'gamify' math, helping the rate of excellent students nearly double after one semester. Not only teacher Tri, many teachers in Ho Chi Minh City use technology to 'gamify' the subject, helping students absorb lessons better and have more fun learning...

Personalize learning for students

In many math lessons, teacher Nguyen Huu Tri - homeroom teacher of class 4/4 at Phu Tho Primary School, Phu Tho Ward, Ho Chi Minh City - applied artificial intelligence (AI) creatively and effectively. He used Chat GPT or virtual assistant Gemini to increase the fun of his lessons as well as personalize learning for students.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Tri is one of the teachers at Phu Tho Primary School who pioneered the use of AI in teaching from the 2024-2025 school year and is continuing to deploy it in the 2025-2026 school year.

In the 2024-2025 school year, with the encouragement of the school in implementing AI applications in teaching, as well as some colleagues at this school, teacher Nguyen Huu Tri began to approach AI and find ways to use AI to teach more effectively and interestingly for students.

With the heart of a long-time teacher who is always looking for innovation and creativity, Mr. Tri saw the positive effects of applying AI in teaching. Mr. Tri applied AI, specifically using Chat GPT and Gimine in teaching math to students in the class he was in charge of at that time (class 4/4).

Before implementing the learning for students, Mr. Tri took the time to introduce virtual assistants (Chat GPT, Gemini) to math learning for students in the class by showing information and how students can use AI to support their learning at home. In class, depending on each math problem, Mr. Tri both teaches and asks for AI support to increase interest as well as evaluate students' learning more effectively.

For example, in many math lessons, Mr. Tri has used AI to "gamify" math, helping students "learn while playing, play while learning". He has used AI to automatically create math games with increasing difficulty levels according to students' abilities and insert virtual reward elements such as gold star badges. Compared to the traditional method of only competing for scores, AI really brings the feeling of learning while playing, playing while learning to students.

In addition, during math lessons, students can also converse with AI as a learning companion. Lessons are no longer dry but become lively, creative and interesting when students can do math problems with videos , comics or mathematical models through the use of AI.

"The 2018 general education program emphasizes the development of competencies, including the ability to think and solve mathematical problems. AI can support education in many ways such as adaptive learning, virtual assistants for teachers to create exercises, automatically provide immediate feedback, gamify content...

After a period of applying AI in teaching math, students' learning results have improved significantly. Before applying AI, class 4/4 had 18% excellent students, 29% good students, 41% average students and 12% weak students.

The biggest challenge at this time is that students quickly forget old knowledge and lack interest in complex math problems. At the same time, teachers have to grade many tests manually, making it difficult to individualize students' learning, while parents are confused when supporting their children in math at home.

According to the statistical results after the study weeks, the percentage of students who are good at math increased to 32%, good to 42%, average to 22% and weak to 4%," said Mr. Tri.

According to Mr. Tri, the effectiveness of using AI in teaching math is to significantly improve students' learning outcomes. On the other hand, students are also more interested and proactive.

It is worth mentioning that AI also helps teachers detect knowledge gaps in students in an instant to adjust their learning content. Previously, teachers had to observe and remember each student, but through AI, real-time analysis of test data helps teachers analyze each student's errors, from which they can personalize teaching to each student quickly, effectively, and promptly.

Create interesting lectures

Ms. Nguyen Song Thanh Thuy - homeroom teacher of class 5/5 at Phu Tho Primary School - has been promoting digital transformation in innovating her teaching methods.

Ms. Thuy has been gradually implementing these measures since previous school years, but starting from the 2025-2026 school year, she has simultaneously applied many digital transformation measures into her lessons.

She uses technology to create digital lectures, organize online learning games, build digital libraries (learning materials warehouses), develop self-study and online collaboration skills, and enhance communication with parents via digital platforms. These measures are really effective in students' learning.

According to Ms. Thuy, she used digital tools to insert images, sounds, videos, and mind maps into the lessons. Thanks to that, students can absorb, remember longer, and be more interested in class.

At the same time, she also built a system of interactive game quizzes right in the lectures to quickly check the students' understanding level. Those digital lectures are shared over the Internet so that students can review them many times at home.

"I also use platforms to design games that are related to the lesson content. During the participation, students can answer questions with multiple choices or compete in groups. This activity helps them review knowledge in a gentle, pressure-free way, developing quick thinking skills.

At the same time, the game results are displayed immediately, helping teachers grasp the level of understanding of students. Shy students also become bolder when participating in the form of digital interaction," said Ms. Thuy.

During this process, Ms. Thuy also created a channel to enhance communication with parents via digital platforms, helping to connect schools and families in teaching students.

She shared: "Through the process of applying it to students in class, I found that the results are that students are bold, confident, and actively seek out learning materials outside of textbooks. Their skills in using Multiple Information Technology, working in groups, and presenting have clearly improved. On the other hand, the school and family will have a closer relationship in managing students' learning content."

The most important point in promoting digital transformation in education is that teachers must choose tools that are suitable for the psychological characteristics of students and help students master their study time on digital technology.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Huong - Principal of Phu Tho Primary School - said that the innovative teaching activities of the school's teachers have been gradually implemented since the previous school year and this school year are being promoted and strongly developed by the school through the initiative "popular digital education".

The school will encourage all teachers to apply AI and modern teaching tools to teaching with the goal of changing traditional teaching methods, helping all students of Phu Tho Primary School become smart, confident and creative "digital citizens".

"We apply AI and digital applications into teaching with the desire to enable each student to learn at their own pace.

Teachers have more tools to make their lessons more engaging, creative, effective, and can personalize teaching for each student even though they have to work with many students at the same time. Our school wants to build a modern, fair and effective learning environment for all students," Ms. Huong said.
