The Thai national team lost to Uzbekistan 1-2 in the Round of 16 match of the 2023 Asian Cup, which took place on the evening of January 30th.
This defeat marks the second time the Thai team has been eliminated in the Round of 16 at the Asian Cup and makes them the last team from Southeast Asia to be knocked out at this stage.
However, according to the world ranking statistics website Football Rankings , the loss to Uzbekistan still keeps the Thai national team ranked number 1 in Southeast Asia, while remaining at 101st in the world.
Following their strong performances at the Asian Cup, the Thai national team climbed 12 places in the FIFA rankings, from 113th to 101st, with their points increasing from 1176.75 to 1207.31, surpassing the Vietnamese national team.
Thailand holds the number one spot in Southeast Asia because coach Philippe Troussier's team was eliminated from the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, dropping significantly from 94th to 106th in the world rankings. This is also the lowest ranking the Vietnamese national team has achieved in five years since parting ways with coach Park Hang Seo.
Notably, besides Thailand, the Indonesian team also improved their ranking after qualifying for the Round of 16 of the Asian Cup for the first time, moving from 146th to 144th in the world. Malaysia, on the other hand, dropped two places in the rankings, from 130th to 132nd in the world.
After the conclusion of the 2023 Asian Cup, the Thai national team will aim to perform well in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Thailand is in Group C and will play two matches against South Korea in March.
