Azerbaijan Airlines stated that the cause of the December 26th plane crash in Kazakhstan was due to 'external physical and technical factors'.
In a statement following the initial investigation, Azerbaijan Airlines said the crash of flight J2-8243 in Kazakhstan was due to external physical and technical impacts, and that it had taken into account potential security risks to the flight, TASS reported on December 27.
The airline's statement also reportedly confirms that the December 26 tragedy was not caused by an onboard malfunction. Azerbaijan Airlines' Embraer 190, en route from Baku to Grozny (in the Chechen region of Russia), crashed near Aktau airport in Kazakhstan. The accident killed at least 38 people and saved 29 others.

Dmitry Yadrov, Director of the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, stated that the destination of flight J2-8243, Grozny, was an area where Ukraine was conducting drone attacks, despite being far from the main front lines of the conflict in Ukraine. Therefore, Yadrov mentioned that Grozny's airspace was closed and there was fog in the city at the time, so the aircraft was instructed to change course. However, the pilot attempted to contact authorities twice to land in Grozny but was unsuccessful, ultimately deciding to fly over the Caspian Sea to Aktau airport, according to CNN.
Reuters reported on December 26, citing several sources, that the plane was shot down by an air defense system. Ukrainian officials accused Russia of "covering up the cause of the accident." Meanwhile, Moscow insisted it needed to wait for the conclusion of the investigation and confirmation from local authorities to understand what had happened.
Two passengers and one crew member who survived the crash told Reuters on December 27 that they heard a loud explosion as the plane was approaching Grozny.
“After the explosion, I thought the plane was about to fall apart,” said passenger Subhonkul Rakhimov. Flight attendant Zulfugar Asadov recounted that the request to land in Grozny was denied due to fog, and the pilot had to circle when he heard an explosion from the left wing, as if something had struck it, causing a loss of cabin pressure. The flight attendant added that the captain had received a request to land on water, but he decided to take the plane to Aktau and land on land, warning that the landing might be difficult.
