On October 26th, Dr. Duong Manh Thang, Vice Rector of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports , announced that for the 2025-2026 academic year, the university will adjust and supplement its training programs, including the pickleball specialization.
This is the first course and also the first pickleball training program of the only sports university in the Central and Central Highlands region.
According to Mr. Thang, the school has just been accredited for three training programs: physical education , sports coaching, and sports management. Based on the recommendations of the external evaluation team and keeping up with social trends, the school has included pickleball in the training programs of all three majors as an elective course, in line with the current needs of sports development.
"Pickleball is a relatively easy sport, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, so those learning sports can pick it up very quickly."
"Many of the school's lecturers have participated in training courses, some have international certifications, and some have even organized national pickleball tournaments. Therefore, the teaching staff is fully prepared to take on the new courses," Mr. Thang said.
He added: "For many years, the school hasn't been able to recruit students for the tennis major. By combining pickleball with tennis this academic year, we've recruited nearly 20 students, opening an intensive class."
According to the program, students majoring in this field will study 24 credits, with half dedicated to tennis and half to pickleball.
The program aims to train teachers, coaches, and sports managers, equipping learners with methods for teaching, coaching, organizing competitions, and managing the sport of pickleball.
Regarding the characteristics of the sport, Mr. Thang believes that pickleball is easy to play and suitable for many age groups, but it still needs time to develop into a specialized sport.
"If training is not done with proper technique, players may experience back or knee problems. However, from a grassroots perspective, this is a sport that is generating excitement and positivity among participants," Mr. Thang added.
In March 2025, the Da Nang Pickleball Federation was established. At the same time, the city's Department of Education and Training also requested that units and schools launch a movement to practice and compete in pickleball among officials, civil servants, employees, and students.
