The first university in Da Nang to open a pickleball major

Danang University of Physical Education and Sports is the first unit in the city to officially train in pickleball from the 2025-2026 school year.

On October 26, Dr. Duong Manh Thang - Vice Principal of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports - said that in the 2025-2026 school year, the school will adjust and supplement training programs, including the pickleball major.

This is the first course and also the first pickleball training program of the only sports university in the Central Highlands region.

According to Mr. Thang, the school has just been granted accreditation certificates for three training programs: physical education , sports training and sports management. Based on the recommendations of the external assessment team and keeping up with social trends, the school has included pickleball in the training programs of all three majors as an elective subject, in line with the current needs of sports development.

"Pickleball is a fairly easy sport, a combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis, so people learning the sport can learn it very quickly.

Many of the school's lecturers have attended training courses, some have international certificates and have organized national pickleball tournaments. Therefore, the teaching staff is completely ready to take on new courses," said Mr. Thang.

"For many years, the school has not been able to recruit tennis majors. When we combined pickleball with tennis this school year, we recruited nearly 20 students and opened an intensive class," he added.

Under the program, students majoring in this field will take 24 credits, with half devoted to tennis and half to pickleball.

The program aims to train teachers, coaches and sports managers, equipping learners with methods of teaching, coaching, organizing competitions, operating and managing pickleball.

Regarding the characteristics of the subject, Mr. Thang said that pickleball is easy to play and suitable for many ages, but to develop it into a specialized subject still takes time.

"If you practice incorrectly, players may experience back or knee problems. However, from a mass perspective, this is a sport that is creating excitement and positivity for participants," Mr. Thang added.

In March 2025, the Da Nang Pickleball Federation was established. At the same time, the city's Department of Education and Training also requested units and schools to launch a movement to practice and compete in pickleball among officials, civil servants, employees, workers and students.
