(CLO) Billionaire Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group and one of the world's richest people, has been charged in New York, according to an announcement from US prosecutors on Wednesday.

Adani and seven other defendants were charged with bribery, US prosecutors said. Five others were charged with conspiracy to violate the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), four of whom were also charged with obstruction of justice.

None of the defendants are currently in custody, and Mr Adani is believed to remain in India.

Gautam Adani, 62, is worth $69.8 billion, according to Forbes magazine, making him the second richest person in India after Mukesh Ambani.

He started in commodities trading in 1988 and built the Adani group, which now includes airports and ports, power generation and mining, and energy transmission.

Mr Adani had just raised $600 million through the sale of 20-year “green” bonds, just hours before the charges were announced.

Mr. Adani recently announced plans to invest $10 billion in energy projects in the United States, but details have not been released.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani and will be forwarded to international law enforcement agencies.

Prosecutors are also investigating possible involvement of international investors and officials, a development that could add to the pressure on business partners and governments in both India and the United States.
