The 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship features 10 teams divided into 3 groups, with Group A having 4 teams and Groups B and C each having 3 teams.
The teams were divided into three seeded groups based on their performance in last year's tournament. Accordingly, the first seeded group included Vietnam U23 (the defending champion), Thailand (the defending runner-up), and Timor Leste (third place).
The second seeded group includes Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The third seeded group includes Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, and Myanmar.
According to the draw results, the Vietnam U23 team is in Group C along with the Philippines and Laos.
Meanwhile, host nation Thailand is in Group A along with Cambodia, Brunei, and Myanmar. Group B will be a competition between Timor Leste, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
The 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship will take place from August 17-26 in Thailand. This is the fourth time the tournament has been held, following previous editions in 2005, 2019, and 2022.
The teams compete in a round-robin format, with points awarded for ranking in each group. The top three teams from each group and the best-performing second-place team from all groups advance to the semi-finals. The two winners of the semi-finals compete in the final for the championship, while the two losers play for third place.
In order to build a strong team for important future goals, the Vietnam U23 team will participate in the tournament with a core group of U20 players, considering this a stepping stone in preparation for the Asian Games (ASIAD) in Hangzhou (China) in September.
Previously, at the 2022 Southeast Asian U23 Championship in Cambodia, Coach Dinh The Nam's team defeated Thailand U23 1-0 to win the championship.
