On January 29, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto arrived in Ukraine for talks with senior Ukrainian officials, weeks after Budapest objected to the European Union's (EU) offer of a 50 billion euro (54 billion USD) aid package to Kyiv.

Reuters reported that the visit took place a few days before the European Union (EU) summit, scheduled for February 1st, aimed at reaching a consensus on a financial aid package that had been delayed due to Hungarian opposition.
Foreign Minister Szijjarto held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba and the President's Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak in the city of Uzhhorod.
On the Telegram messaging app, the Ukrainian President's office posted a photo of Szijjarto, Kuleba, and Yermak with the caption: "A frank and constructive dialogue will improve relations between countries."
Ukraine has expressed hope that the 27 EU member states will agree at the Brussels summit on a four-year aid package that Kyiv intends to use to cover its budget deficit this year, as the Eastern European nation remains embroiled in conflict with Russia.
Meanwhile, Hungary was the only EU member state that did not support the aid package at the December 2023 summit.
