For 28 out of 30 days in November 2024, Vietjet offers zero-fare flights from Phu Quoc to Hanoi, with tickets going on sale on May 11th.

Tickets priced at 0 VND and 90,000 VND have reappeared as airlines launch year-end ticket sales.

On the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route in September, as of May 12th, Vietjet offered 0 VND tickets for one-third of the days in the month. However, this price mainly appeared on Sunday or early weekday flights, with only one flight on Friday (September 20th). After paying additional taxes and fees, the outbound ticket cost nearly 640,000 VND.

On the return leg, most tickets start from 790,000 VND. The total ticket price will be approximately 1.48 million VND. Thus, customers can buy a round-trip ticket from Hanoi to Phu Quoc in September for prices starting from 2.1 million VND (including taxes and fees). The prices are similar in October.

The number of zero-fare tickets increased in the last two months of this year, with 20 days of discounts on the Phu Quoc - Hanoi route. For the outbound journey, the lowest price was 390,000 VND, equivalent to a total round-trip ticket price of approximately 1.05 million VND (including taxes and fees). If choosing a flight schedule that suits their plans, customers would have to spend from 1.7 million VND for a round-trip ticket on the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route.

Similarly, Vietnam Airlines is also selling Hanoi to Phu Quoc tickets for only 1 million VND (including taxes and fees) each way starting in September. This price is available on outbound flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for many weeks until the end of the year. On the Phu Quoc to Hanoi return flight, this price is usually only available on Fridays.

Compared to the upcoming summer peak season, the discounted fares offered by airlines at the end of the year are reduced by up to half. For example, from June to the end of August, round-trip tickets during off-peak hours on the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route with Vietjet start from just over 3 million VND, while Vietnam Airlines tickets are over 5 million VND (including taxes and fees).

Hanoi - Phu Quoc is one of the domestic routes with the sharpest price increase for Vietjet in the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority, one-way tickets on this route increased by nearly 50%, reaching an average of 1.8 million VND per way, equivalent to 3.6 million VND for a round trip. Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines' average price was 2.7 million VND per way (a 14% increase), meaning an average round-trip price of 5.4 million VND.

Since last year, many tourism and travel businesses have frequently complained about the high increase in airfare, which is affecting tourism business in Phu Quoc. During peak seasons such as Tet or summer, tourists have to spend 6-7 million VND for a round-trip ticket to the island.

In the last quarter of the year, Vietjet also sold tickets for 0 or 90,000 VND on flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Hue, etc. Cheap tickets also appeared on some routes, such as the popular Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route (unfavorable flight times - early morning or night flights) or Hanoi - Da Lat.

A round-trip ticket for 0 VND on the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route, flying at inconvenient times in September, cost nearly 1.2 million VND in total (excluding additional fees of over 100,000 VND). Photo: Anh Tú
A round-trip ticket for the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route, with inconvenient flight times in September, would cost nearly 1.2 million VND in total (excluding additional fees of over 100,000 VND).

Mr. Duy Quang, the owner of an airline ticket office in Cau Giay, Hanoi, said this could be the first major domestic low-fare ticket release by airlines since the beginning of this year. Vietjet also offered 0-dong tickets for International Women's Day (March 8th), but the number was insignificant. He advertised round-trip tickets from 1.4 million dong for routes to Phu Quoc and Da Lat and achieved a good sales volume.

According to the results of an inspection of ticket sales activities from January 1st to May 4th, recently announced, the Civil Aviation Authority stated that all four airlines (Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, and Vietravel Airlines) declared prices within the passenger transportation service price framework stipulated by the Ministry of Transport. The Authority affirmed that the domestic ticket prices of these airlines "always remain within the price range" as currently regulated.

However, authorities predict that the supply-demand imbalance will continue during this year's peak summer season. This will also put some pressure on airfares on domestic routes, especially to tourist and resort destinations.

Therefore, this agency advises passengers to plan their travel early, purchase tickets through official sales channels, and proactively monitor information about airlines' flight schedules to choose reasonable ticket prices.
