Japanese authorities have recovered the black box of the Japan Coast Guard aircraft involved in the collision with a Japan Airlines (JAL) commercial aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on January 2nd.
Speaking to reporters on January 3, Mr. Fujiwara Takuya, an investigator of the Japan Transport Safety Board, said that the staff had examined the fuselage of both planes and the debris collected at the scene. The work to retrieve data from the black box is underway. Meanwhile, the black box of the JAL plane has not been found.
Mr. Fujiwara added that investigators have found signs of a collision on the fuselages of both aircraft. Investigators will continue to study the wreckage at the scene until late afternoon on January 3rd.
According to Japanese police, the collision between the two aircraft occurred on the afternoon of January 2nd. All 379 passengers and crew on board the JAL Airbus A350 were safely evacuated, and no one was in life-threatening condition after the plane caught fire.
However, five of the six crew members on board the Japanese Coast Guard aircraft were killed. The pilot escaped the plane but was seriously injured.
