5,255 people died in traffic accidents in the first 6 months of the year

On the morning of July 1st, the Office of the National Traffic Safety Committee announced that in the first six months of this year (from December 15, 2023 to June 14, 2024), there were 12,321 traffic accidents nationwide, resulting in 5,255 deaths and 9,599 injuries. This represents an increase of 1,842 accidents (17.58%), a decrease of 702 deaths (11.78%), and an increase of 2,707 injuries (39.28%) compared to the first six months of 2023 (excluding data from the aviation sector due to its specific characteristics).

Of these, 12,225 road accidents occurred, resulting in 5,191 deaths and 9,584 injuries, an increase of 1,831 accidents (17.62%), a decrease of 703 deaths (11.93%), and an increase of 2,705 injuries (39.32%) compared to the same period last year.

There were 66 railway accidents, resulting in 48 deaths and 10 injuries, an increase of 7 accidents (11.86%), an increase of 3 deaths (6.67%), and a decrease of 3 injuries (23.08%) compared to the same period last year.

There were 27 waterway accidents, resulting in 15 deaths and 5 injuries, an increase of 4 accidents (17.39%), a decrease of 1 death (6.25%), and an increase of 5 injuries compared to the same period last year.

There were 3 maritime incidents, resulting in 1 death and no injuries. The number of incidents and injuries remained unchanged, but the number of deaths and missing persons decreased by 1 (50%) compared to the same period last year.

In the first six months of the year, the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority received 101 mandatory safety reports, with 42 incidents at level D occurring. Compared to the same period in 2023, there was a decrease of 1 incident at level A (100%), an increase of 3 incidents at level D (7.7%), and a decrease of 2 incidents at level C (100%).

The causes of the incidents were 26 due to technical malfunctions, 2 due to bird strikes, 13 due to human error (1 due to flight crew and weather conditions, 7 due to flight crew, 3 due to technical staff, 2 due to ground staff), and 1 incident caused by the aircraft flying into turbulence caused by another aircraft.

In June 2024 alone (from May 15th to June 14th), the whole country experienced 1,894 traffic accidents, resulting in 849 deaths and 1,373 injuries. Compared to the same month in 2023, there was an increase of 140 accidents (7.98%), a decrease of 92 deaths (9.78%), and an increase of 194 injuries (16.45%).

Of these, 1,877 accidents occurred on roads, resulting in 839 deaths and 1,370 injuries. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 140 accidents (8.06%), a decrease of 90 deaths (9.69%), and an increase of 193 injuries (16.4%).

There were 12 railway accidents, resulting in 7 deaths and 3 injuries. Compared to the same period last year, the number of accidents remained unchanged, but the number of deaths decreased by 4 (36.36%), while the number of injuries increased by 1 (50%).

There were 5 waterway accidents, resulting in 3 deaths and no injuries. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 1 accident (25%), an increase of 2 deaths (200%), and no change in the number of injuries.

There were no maritime accidents. Compared to the same period last year, there was a decrease of 1 accident (100%), while the number of fatalities and injuries remained unchanged.

In June 2024, the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority received 25 mandatory safety reports, with 10 incidents classified as level D, an increase of 4 incidents compared to the same period in 2023. Nine incidents were caused by technical malfunctions, and one incident was due to human error (ground staff).
