Besides using high school graduation exam scores for admissions, some top universities are trending towards expanding their own separate entrance exams in 2025.
Vietnam National University , Hanoi
In 2025, the Hanoi National University's aptitude test will consist of 6 sessions, starting in March, with an estimated 85,000 test-takers. The exam will take place in many provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa , Ha Tinh, Da Nang, etc.
The structure of the 2025 aptitude test consists of three parts, two of which are compulsory: Mathematics and Data Processing, and Literature - Language. Approximately 75% of the questions in the test are multiple-choice questions with four options, and 25% are fill-in-the-blank questions.
This is one of the largest separate entrance exams in the country. Approximately 90 universities use the scores from this exam for admissions.
Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City
This is the largest exam in the country, with nearly 107,000 candidates participating last year. More than 100 universities use these results for admissions. In 2025, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will continue to organize the exam with two rounds scheduled for March 30th and June 1st in 25 provinces/cities.
According to the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment of Training at the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the structure and content of the 2025 aptitude test will have many similarities with international standardized tests such as SAT (USA), PET (Israel), or GAT (Thailand). The test aims to assess students' overall abilities, helping universities and colleges select suitable candidates.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology
In 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to organize 3 rounds of aptitude tests on weekends, with each round having 3-4 testing sessions at 30 locations. The exam can accommodate approximately 75,000 test-takers. Specific information on the exam rounds is as follows:
Phase 1: Exam dates January 18-19, registration opens December 1-6, 2024 (Already taken place)
Phase 2: Exam dates: March 8-9, registration opens February 1-6.
Phase 3: Exam dates: April 26-27, registration opens from April 1-6.
Compared to last year, the 2025 TSA exam at Hanoi University of Science and Technology will have 3 fewer exam sessions. In addition to the previously established exam locations, in 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will open a new exam location to support students in the Northwest provinces (an exam location in Lao Cai province). The exam will be computer-based multiple-choice, and the results will be valid for two years to be used for university admissions (depending on the university).
Hanoi Pedagogical University
This year's aptitude test for Hanoi Pedagogical University took place on May 17-18. Twenty-two universities are expected to use the Hanoi Pedagogical University's aptitude test scores for their entrance admissions this year, an increase of 13 universities compared to last year.
The exam is scheduled to be held at four locations: Hanoi Pedagogical University, Vinh University, Quy Nhon University, and Da Nang University of Education.
To participate in the Hanoi University of Education's aptitude test, candidates can register to take the following subjects: Mathematics, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography, and use the test results to apply for admission to regular undergraduate programs according to the requirements of each university.
From 2026 onwards, the exam is expected to expand to include subjects such as Economic and Legal Education, and Information Technology and Technology.
Hanoi Pedagogical University 2
2025 will be the first year that Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 organizes its own entrance examination and uses the results of this examination for university admissions. The university has not yet announced the plan for this examination, however, it will be a competency-based test.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education
In 2025, the specialized aptitude test of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will continue to be conducted with 6 independent tests: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, and English. Specifically, the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology tests will each consist of 40 questions divided into three parts, instead of 50 questions divided into two parts as before.
The exam content covers approximately 70-80% of the 12th-grade curriculum, with the remainder from the 10th and 11th-grade programs. Candidates can register for one or more exams, depending on their needs and chosen subject combinations for admission. The university plans to hold multiple exam sessions in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Da Nang, and Gia Lai. Eight other universities will use these exam scores for their admissions.
Police and military schools
Starting in 2025, the Ministry of National Defence will organize its own assessment exam to be used for admission to military schools. Candidates will take the exam on computers. The exam will cover a wide range of subjects including Mathematics, Literature, English, and a combination of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Candidates will use the exam results for admission to military schools and academies, accounting for approximately 30% of the total enrollment quota.
In addition, police academies also organize specialized competency assessment exams and use the results of these exams for admission. The Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment exam includes both multiple-choice and essay questions. The multiple-choice section, in addition to subject matter content, also tests logical thinking, judgment skills, and situational problem-solving abilities, linked to the specific training requirements of the police force. The essay section tests knowledge in Mathematics and Literature.
