With more than 1,700 applications from 15 countries in the East Asia region, the British Council has selected 55 outstanding candidates from the region to receive this year's scholarships.
Among them, three young people from Vietnam with outstanding abilities and inspiring stories about their dreams of making a personal mark and contributing to society through studying in an international environment were selected.
This year, Vietnam has three candidates with excellent application profiles who have won national awards with scholarships worth 150 million VND, 60 million VND and 30 million VND respectively.
Notably, all three IELTS Prize winners this year have the same choice to study in the UK, the home of the English language.
Nguyen Huyen My, First Prize of IELTS Prize 2023, is studying for a Master's degree in Business Analytics at Aston University, UK.
The stories of these talented young people have proven that the “touch point” between the passion and personal capacity of the young generation of Vietnam and the mission of the IELTS Prize scholarship is the spirit of dedication to the community.
Understanding the difficulties in the learning process and improving foreign language proficiency of Vietnamese learners, Nguyen Huyen My, the winner of the IELTS Prize 2023, decided to pursue a Master's degree in Business Analytics at Aston University (UK). The course offers Huyen My the opportunity to conduct in-depth and comprehensive research on educational data.
"The IELTS Prize scholarship is not simply financial support, but also support for my vision of a future of education - where learners are equipped with comprehensive knowledge and teachers are optimally supported," Huyen My shared.
Le Thu Ha, Second Prize of IELTS Prize 2023, is pursuing a Master's degree in Education at the University of Bristol, UK.
Through taking the IELTS exam and pursuing a Master's degree in Education, Le Thu Ha, the second prize winner of the IELTS Prize 2023, believes she can contribute to the positive innovation of the country's education sector in the future.
She shares her vision of creating an educational environment where everyone understands the value of learning a foreign language and where students' voices are truly heard.
Thu Ha confided: "I hope young people understand that the destination of learning English does not stop at great achievements, but also aims to enhance the ability to use foreign languages to interact effectively and develop themselves in a globalized world."
As for Nguyen Ngoc Dung, the third prize winner of IELTS Prize 2023, his interests focus on social issues, especially the mental and emotional health of young Vietnamese people.
This is also the motivation for Ngoc Dung to pursue building an application that provides bilingual documents and courses for those passionate about the field of psychology.
Nguyen Ngoc Dung, Third Prize of IELTS Prize 2023, is studying for a Master's degree in Psychological Research Methods at the University of Exeter, UK.
Through this platform, the young Vietnamese generation will have the opportunity to access general knowledge about psychology, while improving their English language skills.
Ngoc Dung hopes that initiatives such as his learning apps or podcasts can contribute to a healthy environment for young people to share information, real-life experiences and mental health treatments, helping to support individuals who are going through life crises.
As an annual scholarship of the British Council, IELTS Prize aims to support IELTS candidates on their journey to pursue their undergraduate or postgraduate study goals in any desired field or country.
Initiated in 2011, the IELTS Prize Scholarship helps individuals achieve significant career success and make practical contributions to society.
In particular, this year's scholarship also has innovations such as adjusting the IELTS score requirement for application from 6.0 or higher to 5.5 or higher to expand application opportunities for many candidates, helping to further the educational dreams of young Vietnamese people.
This is an opportunity for young people to express their personal desires, career development goals and ambitions to serve society after completing their undergraduate or graduate programs.
Ms. Heather Forbes, Director of International Examinations, British Council East Asia, shared that the IELTS Prize scholarship recognizes the participation of individuals with excellent academic achievements as well as a commitment to contributing to the community.
More importantly, scholarship recipients are those who demonstrate a determination to apply the knowledge and expertise gained during their studies to contribute to their country or homeland.
“The British Council is proud to support these ambitious and intelligent individuals on their journey to study and develop their careers. We believe that promoting international education will be the key to their future success,” said Heather Forbes.
