The Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has recently issued a document to the principals of high schools, directors of continuing education centers, and heads of district, town, and city education departments, instructing them to conduct a survey on whether students in the province have Saturdays off from school.
Accordingly, based on the relevant documents and circulars, the current Continuing Education Program at the high school level stipulates that students in grades 6 and 7 average 29 lessons/week; grades 8 and 9 average 29.5 lessons/week; grades 10, 11, and 12 average 29 lessons/week (excluding elective subjects such as ethnic languages and second foreign languages); and the Continuing Education block averages 28.5 lessons/week.
Many parents and students agree with the survey on having Saturdays off from school.
To provide a basis for advising the Provincial People's Committee on the implementation of Saturday school closures, the Department of Education and Training instructs relevant units to report on their facilities, classrooms, and teaching staff when implementing a two-session-per-week school schedule, in order to arrange for students and teachers to have Saturdays off. A 100% survey will be conducted among all leaders, teachers, staff, students, and parents to serve as a basis for recommendations.
Following this announcement, many parents expressed strong support for high school students having Saturdays off. Ms. Hoang Thi Nhi (Ba Ria City) stated: "After six consecutive days of school, my child is already exhausted, so I want them to have more time on Saturday to play and participate in other activities with the family."
However, some concerns remain about how to arrange the schedule to ensure 29 lessons per week without making the curriculum too heavy for one day, especially since parents still work on Saturdays while children are at home, leading to a lack of supervision.
Previously, seven other localities across the country, including Phu Tho, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Hanoi , Ha Tinh City, Nha Trang City, and Vinh City, were piloting a 5-day school week, giving students the entire Saturday and Sunday off.
