The digestive system is designed to eliminate waste products from the body on its own. The body largely cleanses itself without any assistance, and scientific research warns against frequent colon cleansing, according to the Cleveland Clinic (USA).

The doctor has issued a warning that it's really not worth trying.

Don't even think about trying it!

The "coffee enema" trend is emerging among the increasingly common and unhelpful hot trends appearing on TikTok.

In response to this trend, Dr. Samita Garg, a gastroenterologist working in Clackamas, Oregon (USA), and affiliated with several hospitals such as the Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center (USA), issued a warning: You really shouldn't try it.

Here, Samita Garg shares why coffee enemas should be avoided.

What is a coffee enema?

Coffee enemas involve pumping a solution filled with brewed coffee into the rectum. Proponents claim it can boost immunity, increase energy, remove toxins from the body, treat certain ailments, and relieve chronic constipation, but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.

Dr. Garg warns: This is not a recommended therapy and carries some potential risks, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

I recommend drinking coffee because data shows it stimulates bowel movements and helps food move through the intestines.

In addition, drinking coffee also has positive effects on the liver, reduces the risk of diabetes, and more.

"Coffee enema" is currently emerging among the increasingly common and unhelpful and harmful hot trends appearing on TikTok.

Side effects and risks of coffee enemas

The rectum and intestinal lining are thin and very sensitive. Studies show that coffee enemas can cause some side effects, including colitis and proctitis.

Dr. Garg stated: "Colitis can cause pain or bleeding, and if the enema fluid is hot, it can also cause rectal burns."

This can also cause the urge to defecate, leading to an overreaction of the nerves in the lower intestine and muscle spasms, thus creating a constant feeling of needing to go to the toilet even when unable to.

Is coffee enemas a good idea?

Dr. Garg said: If you're dealing with constipation, try eating more fiber, drinking plenty of water, and having a cup of coffee.

But more importantly, if you suffer from chronic constipation and need enemas and laxatives, always consult your doctor.
