Initial investigations revealed that on December 8, 2024, the hackers disabled a third-party cybersecurity barrier provided by BeyondTrust (USA). The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI simultaneously launched an investigation to determine the extent of the hacking attack, which the Treasury Department described as "a major incident."
Following accusations from Washington, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning yesterday denied any involvement of the Chinese government. "China has always opposed all forms of cyberattacks," Xinhua quoted the spokesman as saying.
Representatives from BeyondTrust stated that the company detected and implemented security response measures in early December 2024. Some BeyondTrust customers were affected by the incident, and the company is cooperating with the investigating authorities.
