The 28-year-old remains an integral part of the Bayern Munich squad. Kimmich has made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarians in the 2022-23 season, scoring seven goals. In all, the German midfielder has made 347 appearances for the Bundesliga giants since moving from RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich in 2015. Therefore, Bayern Munich still considers the 1995-born player one of the team's key stars and according to German media, they are looking to keep Kimmich at all costs.
However, in Spain, after the departure of Sergio Busquets in 2023, Barcelona are looking for a new holding midfielder and coach Xavi has made no secret of his admiration for the German international. The Catalan giants have sent three offers to the Bavarians, but all were rejected. In early June 2023, coach Xavi continued to praise Kimmich in front of the media and he revealed that negotiations could take place between the two clubs if the German champions were open to it.
The Spanish coach told Muno Deportivo : "He is a superb player who understands the game very well. If there is an opportunity, Barca will immediately open negotiations with Bayern."
Coach Xavi declared that he admires Kimmich's talent
In response to the Spanish club's interest in Kimmich, Bayern Munich President Hainer has been harshly critical of the move, admitting that he finds it difficult to understand why the La Liga champions are constantly approaching his player while Bayern Munich have openly declared Kimmich an important member of the team.
Mr Hainer told German newspaper BILD : "First of all, coach Xavi is a great player and I have great respect for Barcelona. But I don't understand why they flirt with our players in such a public and insulting way. Joshua Kimmich is an important player and that is a great foundation for us.
Joshua is a maestro, has won many titles with us and he will certainly continue to do so in the future. Kimmich is definitely in Bayern Munich's plans for the future."
In addition to Barcelona, the English team, Man City is also currently paying special attention to Kimmich's case. Coach Pep Guardiola's team has won the Champions League but is expected to say goodbye to many important players in the midfield, notably captain Ilkay Gundogan. Currently, Gundogan and Man City have not found a common voice in extending the contract and he is not on the list of Man City players retained for the 2023-2024 season.
Ilkay Gundogan has yet to reach an agreement to extend his contract with Man City
