Former Vietnamese Youth Volunteers meet to pay tribute on the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory

Comrade Truong Hoa Binh , former member of the Politburo and former Standing Deputy Prime Minister, along with Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Former Youth Volunteers Vu Trong Kim, presented commemorative medals to delegates and outstanding former youth volunteers.

Attending the program were Comrade Truong Hoa Binh, former member of the Politburo and former Standing Deputy Prime Minister; leaders of the Vietnam Association of Former Youth Volunteers; and representatives from central ministries and agencies. On the Dien Bien province side, attendees included Comrade Le Thanh Do, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Lo Van Mung, Standing Committee member and Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Department, and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province; Vu A Bang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; representatives from provincial departments and agencies; and over 200 former youth volunteer cadres and members from across the country.

During the exchange, delegates and former Youth Volunteers met and reminisced about historical traditions. Mr. Vu Trong Kim, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Former Youth Volunteers, recalled key milestones: In December 1953, the plan to launch the Dien Bien Phu Campaign was approved, and the Youth Volunteer unit, named the Dien Bien Phu Brigade, was mobilized with 18,200 Youth Volunteers, organized into 40 companies to participate in the campaign. The first Youth Volunteer units secretly crossed the forests with the army to the Northwest. To mislead the enemy, some Youth Volunteer units marched to Viet Bac, while parts of Teams 34 and 40, together with the engineering troops, cleared 80km of the Tuan Giao - Dien Bien Phu road; clearing rapids on the Da, Ma, and Nam Na rivers to facilitate transportation by boat. Despite fierce enemy attacks, the Youth Volunteers bravely held onto bridges and roads, ensuring the smooth flow of vital transportation routes...

Comrade Truong Hoa Binh, representing the sponsoring unit, presented the support to the Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers and the Dien Bien Provincial Fund for the Poor.

By the end of the campaign, the Youth Volunteer Force had repaired and expanded 3,300km of roads, defused thousands of unexploded bombs, and ensured traffic flow at 60 ferry crossings… Along with civilian laborers, they carried hundreds of thousands of tons of rice, food, medicine, and essential supplies to support the campaign.

Chairman of the Vietnam Former Youth Volunteers Association, Vu Trong Kim, recalled the historical traditions of the Association, especially the Youth Volunteers who participated in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vu A Bang affirmed the important role of the Youth Volunteer Force; expressing gratitude to the generations of former Youth Volunteers who contributed to the Dien Bien Phu Victory and the development of Dien Bien province. He provided an overview of the province's development and pledged that, in keeping with the tradition of "drinking water, remembering the source," Dien Bien province will continue to pay attention to and effectively implement policies for the Youth Volunteer Force in the province. He also hoped that former Youth Volunteers would continue to monitor and support the development of Dien Bien province in the future.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vu A Bang delivered a speech at the exchange event.

At the program, former Youth Volunteers, historical witnesses who participated in the resistance against French colonialism and the Dien Bien Phu campaign, participated in exchanges, discussions, and shared memories and special experiences from their participation in the campaign.

Former Youth Volunteers participated in discussions and conversations at the meeting.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Association of Former Youth Volunteers awarded 55 commemorative medals to outstanding delegates and officials of the association. Former Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, representing the sponsoring unit, donated 100 million VND to the Provincial Fund for the Poor and 100 million VND to the Dien Bien Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers.
