During the meeting, representatives from VinaCapital Group presented proposals for a biochar production project using forest by-products and a sustainable forest development project in Quang Tri province. These projects aim to promote sustainable forest economic development, contribute to job creation for local people, increase the local government's contribution to emission reduction, and enhance the competitiveness of wood products through improved quality.
The project to produce biochar from forest by-products will utilize raw materials from forest by-products such as small branches, leaves, and roots after each harvest. Surveys of forest harvesting show that by-products left behind account for approximately 15% of the total forest reserves, generating no revenue for forest owners. If the project is implemented, it will consume these by-products, creating additional income for forest owners and contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality. Currently, biochar is widely used in many countries due to its advantages in soil improvement, reducing the harmful effects of burning straw, chaff, and forest by-products; especially its reuse in crop cultivation, contributing to carbon credits and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
For sustainable forest development projects, implementing activities that extend the harvesting cycle of planted forests will increase the supply of high-value timber from planted forests, in line with the goal of improving productivity, quality, and economic efficiency from forests.
Furthermore, generating carbon credits from forest by-products and increasing carbon reserves by extending the forest business period is consistent with the direction of forest development outlined in the "Vietnam Forestry Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050," approved by the Prime Minister.
Quang Tri province has a total forest and forest development planning area of nearly 278,000 hectares, of which over 248,000 hectares are forest land and nearly 30,000 hectares are forest development planning land. The forest cover rate of the entire province remains stable, reaching 49.4% in 2023. With this advantage, Quang Tri province has great potential in the field of providing carbon credits from forests in the future.
Based on the investor's project proposal, relevant departments and agencies have assessed that the research and implementation of the aforementioned projects are consistent with the development plan for the sector and the existing potential, conditions, and strengths of the province. The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will compile and report the results, and advise the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee to consider and give opinions on the projects in the coming time.
