The Israeli army on July 13 carried out an airstrike on a location near Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, after receiving information that Mohammed Deif - one of the key figures planning the attack on Israeli territory on October 7 last year, was hiding there.

An Israeli security official said the military was still assessing whether the airstrike killed Mohammed Deif. If so, Mohammed Deif would be the most senior Hamas military commander killed by Israel in more than nine months of fighting in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli security official told the Wall Street Journal that the July 13 airstrike also targeted the commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis brigade. Meanwhile, Gaza officials told the world media that dozens of Palestinian civilians were killed and many others were wounded in the attack.
