Regarding the case of the deputy head of the People's Procuracy accused of "extorting money" from the family of a defendant, on November 3rd, a source from Thanh Niên newspaper reported that the People's Procuracy of Ca Mau province has issued a reprimand to Mr. Pham Tan Nua, Deputy Head of the People's Procuracy of Ngoc Hien district.
Accordingly, Mr. Nua was disciplined for his involvement in the case where Mr. Lai Tan Tai (62 years old, residing in Rach Goc Town, Ngoc Hien District) accused officials of the People's Procuracy and the Police of Ngoc Hien District of "extorting money" to secure his daughter's release on bail.

As Thanh Nien newspaper previously reported, Mr. Lai Tan Tai accused officials from the People's Procuracy and the Police of Ngoc Hien District of "extorting money" to secure bail for his daughter, Lai Phuong Thuy (35 years old). Subsequently, the Criminal Investigation Office of the Ca Mau Provincial Police forwarded Mr. Tai's complaint to the Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency of Ngoc Hien District Police and the Chief Prosecutor of the People's Procuracy of Ngoc Hien District.
Mr. Tài's complaint alleges that he met with a Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the People's Procuracy of Ngọc Hiển District to request bail for his daughter Thúy due to her family circumstances. Mr. Tài asserted, "This person solicited 40 million VND from me, but instructed me not to tell anyone. If I agreed, the bail for my daughter would be approved the following day ( April 4th)."
Reportedly, in a letter sent to the Director of the Ca Mau Provincial Police, Mr. Tai accused three officers from the Ngoc Hien District Police and two officers from the Ngoc Hien District People's Procuracy of extorting money from his family.
Previously, in May 2023, after receiving information about a suspected case of "extortion" to secure bail in Ngoc Hien District, Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Head of the Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption and Negative Phenomena in Ca Mau Province, directed relevant agencies to investigate and clarify the matter.
Recently, the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee Office issued a document informing about the results of the investigation and handling of the case. According to the document, after verification, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that bribery occurred, but the individuals involved violated the procedures and regulations of their respective sectors during the performance of their duties. Consequently, the Ca Mau Provincial Police have disciplined and held accountable 10 related officials. The Ca Mau Provincial People's Procuracy has also disciplined one prosecutor from Ngoc Hien District. The document from the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee Office does not specify which individuals were disciplined or the form of disciplinary action.
On the same day, November 3rd, Mr. Lai Tan Tai stated that he had not yet received any notification from the authorities regarding the 11 police and People's Procuracy officials from Ngoc Hien District who were reprimanded. "To date, I have only received a press release from the Chief Inspector of the People's Procuracy of Ca Mau Province, concluding that the allegations were 'considered to have signs of wrongdoing, but there is insufficient evidence to draw a conclusion.' As the person who filed the complaint, I need to know clearly how the accused are being reprimanded and held accountable, but I don't understand why I haven't received any notification of the police's handling of the matter. I only know about the case through press reports," Mr. Tai said.
