According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , as of December 2023, the total poultry population in Vietnam was nearly 559 million birds, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2022, including poultry raised for meat and poultry raised for egg production.
| New egg exports account for 1% of total production. |
Total poultry meat output for the whole year is estimated at nearly 2.31 million tons, up 6%; poultry egg output in 2023 is estimated at 19.22 billion eggs, up 5.2% over the same period in 2022.
Notably, our country's poultry eggs (fresh and processed eggs) have been exported to dozens of countries and territories around the world . However, poultry egg exports only account for about 1% of the country's total egg production, with the remainder serving domestic consumption needs.
Vietnam is one of the countries with the largest poultry population in the world. However, products from this industry mainly serve domestic consumption needs, with exports accounting for an insignificant proportion. According to the leader of the Vietnam Poultry Association, in 2022, the average Vietnamese person consumed 184 poultry eggs, a relatively low figure compared to many other countries.
Therefore, egg-laying poultry farming still has significant potential, as Vietnam's egg consumption is projected to reach 250 eggs per person by 2030. Alongside this, export opportunities for Vietnam's egg industry are expanding as we have signed numerous trade agreements and traditional markets are reopening.
At the end of July 2023, after more than four years, the Hong Kong (China) market lifted the ban and allowed the import of eggs and poultry egg products from the provinces of Tay Ninh, Binh Duong , Binh Phuoc, and Dong Nai.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recently completed negotiations for the export of poultry meat and eggs to Mongolia. Given that poultry farming accounts for a very low proportion of the economy in Mongolia, this is a potential market. Vietnamese egg products will have many advantages in accessing this market.
In 2024, the Department of Animal Husbandry aims for a 4.0-5.0% increase in the value of livestock production compared to 2023; poultry meat production to reach over 2.31 million tons, a 3.1% increase; and egg production of approximately 19.68 billion eggs, a 3.7% increase.
