The move came after Azerbaijan and China adopted a joint statement on establishing a strategic partnership in early July, according to News AZ. In the statement, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS and Beijing welcomed cooperation with Baku within the framework of this organization.

Russia also recently supported the aspirations of Azerbaijan - a country in the Caucasus region, to join BRICS, as shown in the joint statement on August 19 between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev when the Kremlin leader officially visited Baku.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization, currently with 10 members. Since its inception in 2006, the bloc has undergone two phases of expansion. In 2011, South Africa joined the original group of members Brazil, Russia, India and China.

In January 2024, BRICS admitted five new members including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Egypt.

Dozens of other countries have also expressed interest in joining the organization.
