Greening saline land
On the special saline land, people are creative with intercropping and polyculture models . Growing crops on the square shrimp beds not only increases income but also improves the soil, prevents erosion, and contributes to building green agriculture .
As one of the pioneers in growing crops on saline soil, forcing the land to generate profits, Mrs. Tran Thi Gao’s household (Hung Hiep hamlet) has more than 5 years of experience in implementing this model. With nearly 3 hectares of land for raising shrimp and crabs, Mrs. Gao has utilized more than 3,000 square meters of square beds to grow corn. Cultivating 3 crops a year, Mrs. Gao earns about 50 million VND from crops.
Mrs. Gao confided: “In recent years, shrimp and crab farming has failed, and the family's expenses have been quite high, so my family has proactively increased income by growing crops on the shrimp square beds. I mainly grow corn and sell it for 50-70 thousand VND/dozen, bringing in a significant profit for the family.”
Mrs. Tran Thi Gao's household earns over 50 million VND/year from the model of growing vegetables on salty soil.
To achieve such results, the role of local authorities in propaganda and mobilization of people is very important. Mr. Nguyen Van Ti, Head of Hung Hiep Hamlet, said: "In the past, the hamlet regularly mobilized people to take advantage of the garden embankment to grow fruit trees, square shrimp embankments to grow vegetables to improve meals and increase income. Thereby, people actively responded and participated, the scale increased, each crop was larger than the previous crop."
However, to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the model, technical support, varieties and production linkage are key factors. According to engineer Nguyen Van Hieu, an agricultural extension officer in charge of Nguyen Viet Khai commune, the provincial Agricultural Extension Center is currently coordinating with the People's Committee of Nguyen Viet Khai commune to implement color planting on an area of 5 hectares, aiming to replicate the color planting model among farmers, contributing to creating strong changes in the process of building a green, clean agriculture that adapts to climate change in the future of the locality.
Key aquaculture areas
With a natural area of over 12,990 hectares, of which over 11,800 hectares (over 91%) are for aquaculture, Nguyen Viet Khai commune is gradually shaping itself as a key shrimp production area of the province. Not only developing in scale, farmers are increasingly focusing on technology and environmental friendliness.
The zero-waste shrimp farming model shortens farming time and gives high productivity.
A typical example is Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan's household (Tan Nghia hamlet), who previously raised shrimp in a super-intensive manner but was ineffective due to water pollution and disease. Since 2023, he has switched to extensive shrimp farming with no discharge - a new direction that is being encouraged to be replicated. He renovated the old pond, added algae to the pond to create a natural water source and applied a circulating filtration system. He currently has 2 ponds and 3 settling ponds. This model not only saves costs but also shortens the farming time and significantly increases output.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan shared: “Previously, after each crop, I had to discharge the water and then take water from the river and clean it, which was very time-consuming and costly. But now, I have prepared 3 settling ponds with a circulation system, taking water back for use, with less bacteria, faster and more economical.”
From a place where technology was rarely applied, people in the commune have now been more proactive in treating the pond environment, selecting good breeds, and using microorganisms periodically. Thanks to that, the average shrimp yield has increased from 200-300 kg/ha to 400-500 kg/ha, and in some places it has even reached higher levels.
The zero-waste shrimp farming model is highly appreciated and actively responded to by the people of Nguyen Viet Khai commune.
Mr. Huynh Phuong Nhanh, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, informed: "The commune has directed specialized departments to focus on reviewing the planning area, selecting models of shrimp farming without waste discharge for sustainable development. Aiming to build a farming area of 100 hectares or more, achieving international certifications, with traceability. Thereby, increasing the value of the locality's key shrimp products".
After the merger, it is not simply a change in administrative boundaries but also an opportunity to reshape the local economic development strategy. With clear directions and consensus from the government and people, Nguyen Viet Khai commune is gradually transforming itself, becoming a model in building a modern, adaptive and sustainable agriculture.
