Marilyn Monroe's fans have won the battle to protect her legacy in Los Angeles. As a result, the Los Angeles home where Monroe briefly lived and died has been declared a cultural and historical landmark, and the 8-meter-tall statue titled "Forever Marilyn" will remain in place.
The Los Angeles City Council voted to make the decision after a protracted battle over the demolition of the home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood. Marilyn Monroe bought the house for $75,000 and died just months later, on August 4, 1962, from a drug overdose. The current owners, Brinah Milstein and Roy Bank, purchased the house for $8.35 million and obtained a demolition permit, but faced opposition from fans. The current owners, who live next door, want to demolish the house to expand their property.
