NDO - On March 16, Director of the Dak Lak Provincial Social Protection Center (under the Dak Lak Department of Health ) Nguyen Xuan Quy said that many elderly people and people with disabilities at the Provincial Social Protection Center had symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting and had to be hospitalized for treatment due to dysentery.

To date, a total of seven people are being treated and cared for at Buon Ma Thuot General Hospital. After the incident, the Dak Lak Provincial Social Protection Center sprayed disinfectants, cleaned up, and isolated some areas to prevent the spread of the disease.

Previously, at around 4-5 p.m. on March 14, Buon Ma Thuot City General Hospital received six patients from the provincial Social Protection Center who were hospitalized in a state of bloody stools and exhaustion.

On March 15, the hospital received another patient with similar symptoms. The patients were between 60 and 80 years old and all had old age-related physical conditions, high blood pressure, mental disorders, difficulty communicating, and poor appetite.

At the hospital, the patients were diagnosed with suspected food-borne gastrointestinal infections.

Immediately after receiving information about suspected food poisoning at the Provincial Social Protection Center, the Office of the People's Council and People's Committee of Buon Ma Thuot City coordinated with the City Medical Center to verify the incident.

Verification results show that every day the kitchen at the Provincial Social Protection Center provides nutritional services for 160 children, the elderly, the disabled and people in need of emergency protection.

From March 11 to 13, some elderly and disabled people showed symptoms of digestive disorders such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and mild fever. The provincial Social Protection Center examined them and prescribed medication according to their symptoms.

Suspected food poisoning victims are all gathered in an area reserved for the elderly and disabled who cannot take care of themselves, eat, or take care of their personal hygiene. Daily activities require support, care, and are completely dependent on the staff of the Dak Lak Provincial Social Protection Center.

By March 14, the provincial Social Protection Center had transferred six of the 14 people to Buon Ma Thuot City General Hospital for treatment due to blood in the stool and exhaustion; three of the remaining eight people were healthy, and five were stable and no longer had the initial symptoms.

Stool test results of three patients showed signs of infection with the presence of amoebic cysts, fungi, red blood cells and white blood cells in the stool.

According to the verification results, the provincial Social Protection Center has implemented food safety regulations as prescribed. However, there was a phenomenon of washing clothes of infected people in industrial washing machines.

Immediately after the incident, the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health directed the general cleaning of the entire residential area and around the Dak Lak Provincial Social Protection Center with bleach and sprayed with Cloramin B; maintained sanitary conditions, periodically disinfected areas for the elderly and disabled who cannot clean or take care of themselves; and strictly implemented food safety and hygiene measures for communal kitchens.

To determine the cause of some elderly people and disabled people at the Provincial Social Protection Center having symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting and having to be hospitalized, the Dak Lak Provincial Department of Health directed the Provincial Center for Disease Control to continue taking samples for testing to confirm the cause of the incident.
