The Son La Provincial Museum has recently launched a VR (virtual reality) technology application for visiting the Son La Prison National Special Monument, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of recreation and promote the historical value of the monument in a sustainable manner.
The interface for the application to visit the Son La Prison National Special Monument on the provincial museum's website.
Previously, the preservation, storage, and promotion of historical values at the site only utilized traditional technologies and means. The dissemination of historical values was limited to on-site activities and online information platforms using simple technology, with artifacts displayed in 2D.
The provincial-level scientific project "Application of VR (Virtual Reality) Technology to Build a Tour Model of the Son La Prison National Special Monument" was implemented from May 2022 to December 2023, chaired by the University of Information Technology and Communications - Thai Nguyen University.
The goal is to build a virtual reality tour model of the Son La Prison National Special Historical Site using VR technology running on a 3D web environment, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of recreating and promoting the historical value of the site. This web-based 3D access and research service will contribute positively to local history education and promote tourism development.
The project team collected images and field data of the entire Son La Prison landscape, exhibition spaces, artifacts, documents, and historical evidence to recreate and reconstruct the buildings, prison cells, and living conditions of prisoners. They also built 3D models of historical evidence, artifacts, documents, figures, prisoners, and guards at Son La Prison. They created skeletal structures and recreated movement for the historical figures to enhance the user experience and evoke a sense of realism.

Based on that, a virtual reality simulation system for the Son La Prison National Special Monument was developed using VR technology running on a 3D web environment integrated into the provincial museum's website. Simultaneously, two scientific workshops and one training course were organized for 15 museum staff members on how to use and utilize the functions of the virtual monument tour application.
The guided tour model, featuring vivid, moving 3D images combined with automatic narration, has helped readers visualize the entire structure and the activities, detention, and torture of political prisoners that once took place there.
Currently, the application is integrated into the Son La Provincial Museum's website. Readers who wish to experience it can access it at: https://baotangsonla.vn/3dnhatusonla/index.html
