“Hunting for cheap tickets is no longer a matter of trying your luck if you know how to do it right,” said UK consumer protection organization Which?.

Travellers should use price comparison websites before deciding whether to book now or wait for a better deal, according to Which?, which assessed a range of tools based on surveys of thousands of travellers and independent analysis.

Hunting for hotel rooms

Which? Kayak, Trivago, and Skyscanner are the three most effective price comparison tools for finding cheap hotels. However, these sites cannot verify the quality of each booking site they recommend.

Therefore, after checking the price, tourists should book directly with the hotel. Many hotels are willing to give additional discounts or incentives when customers call to discuss directly.

Hunting for plane tickets

Each flight price comparison tool has its own pros and cons. Which? recommends travelers combine Google Flights, Kayak, and Skyscanner to cross-check fares.

Google Flights and Kayak often show alerts about the optimal time to book. In Which?'s survey, Google Flights was rated highest for its flexible filters, ability to suggest cheap destinations, and the option to exclude results that don't include checked baggage.

With Skyscanner, users simply enter their departure and arrival points and expected travel times, and the tool will provide average prices and the cheapest times to buy, even suggesting flights with low CO2 emissions. However, travelers have commented that the displayed prices are sometimes not really accurate, even though they are not too far from reality.

Kayak features price drop predictions and alerts when tickets drop in price.

Finally, Which? experts stress: always check prices directly with the airline and book through them when possible. This helps passengers minimize risk if they need to change or adjust their schedule.
