AI application promotes high-tech agriculture in the Mekong Delta

Artificial intelligence has supported farmers and businesses from crop monitoring to accurate weather forecasting, smart irrigation and fertilization system management to optimize costs and increase profits.

Managing agricultural production to supply food efficiently and with quality is a necessary requirement for every business and farmer today.

Therefore, the emergence of artificial intelligence has supported farmers and businesses from crop monitoring to accurate weather forecasting, smart irrigation and fertilization system management, helping farmers optimize costs and increase sustainable profits.

Implementing Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, many localities in the Southern region have deployed solutions to apply artificial intelligence in agricultural production management.

As one of the localities with strongly developed agriculture, with a tendency to transform into high-tech agriculture, Dong Nai province has concretized and implemented solutions.

According to Mr. Duong Minh Dung, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee, with many breakthrough opportunities today, the role of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation is very important, and is the shortest way to realize the aspiration set forth in Resolution 57.

Dong Nai province hopes that businesses will be proactive and bold in investing and applying advanced technological solutions to improve competitiveness and create high-quality products and services.

The Mekong Delta is no longer unfamiliar with the application of high technology and artificial intelligence in production management. Large-scale rice production areas have seen changes in the application of science and technology.

According to Mr. Trieu Hoang Huong, a farmer growing 9 hectares of rice in Lam Tan commune, Can Tho city, previously, to treat 9 hectares of rice with chemicals, his family had to spend several days and hire more workers, which was both difficult and costly. Now, it only takes less than 2 hours of drone flight to complete the job, safer and more effective.

Not only stopping at drones, many cooperatives are also boldly applying digital technology in field management.

Mr. Lam Phuong Tung - Director of Phuoc An Agricultural Cooperative (Thuan Hoa commune, Can Tho city) - said that all 63 hectares of specialty fragrant rice are produced according to VietGAP standards, fully mechanized and have QR codes attached to trace the origin.

With just a QR code scan, consumers, businesses or traders can clearly grasp information from the household owner, cultivated area to sowing history, fertilization and seed treatment.

This is an important step towards electronic diary, contributing to the construction of transparent and modern agriculture. Phuoc An Agricultural Cooperative has also invested in a salinity monitoring system, pest monitoring system and automatic pumping station, all controlled via smartphone. Thanks to that, farmers do not need to watch water or watch for planthoppers day and night, but the rice fields are still guaranteed the best growing conditions.

However, to be able to effectively utilize artificial intelligence, especially artificial intelligence used in agriculture, users must be able to distinguish the strength, risks and ability to control risks from artificial intelligence.

Many scientists believe that for artificial intelligence to truly become a driving force for development, Vietnam needs a comprehensive strategy: data infrastructure, high-quality human resources, a complete legal framework, and a dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Most importantly, artificial intelligence must be oriented to serve people, protect human rights, and strengthen national security in the digital age.

From these analyses, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Minister of Science and Technology - shared that Vietnam will quickly build a national artificial intelligence supercomputing center and open shared artificial intelligence data.

At the same time, popularize artificial intelligence, popularize artificial intelligence education, like the previous English learning movement. Each Vietnamese person will have a digital assistant, the population will not increase but social intelligence will at least double./.
