At the reception, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Anh Tuan highly appreciated the role of UNIDROIT in harmonizing and unifying private law, typically the model laws and important international conventions developed by UNIDROIT that have been widely applied by the business community and investors.
The visit of the UNIDROIT Secretary General is meaningful in the context that Vietnam is actively perfecting its institutions, building and enforcing laws in the direction of innovative thinking, and unleashing resources to meet the country's development needs in the new era. According to the Deputy Minister, quality legal documents in accordance with advanced international standards of UNIDROIT can be a useful source of reference information for Vietnam in the process of building a modern legal system, meeting the requirements of practice.
Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan expressed his gratitude for UNIDROIT's cooperation with Vietnam in promoting the Research Initiative to build an international legal framework for cross-border carbon credit markets at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL); and requested UNIDROIT to strengthen legal cooperation, consultation, and support to enhance Vietnam's capacity in building and perfecting laws, especially in the fields of green economy , digital economy, science and technology.
In addition, Deputy Minister Le Anh Tuan requested UNIDROIT to consider accepting Vietnamese cadres, lecturers, researchers and students to practice, work and conduct research at the Organization in order to train and foster highly qualified legal human resources for Vietnam.

The UNIDROIT Secretary General expressed his pleasure in visiting Vietnam to strengthen and develop the cooperation between the two sides. He said that Vietnam's cooperation priorities are completely consistent with the goals and principles of UNIDROIT.
The documents developed by UNIDROIT include the Luxembourg Protocol on Railways and the Protocol on Mining, Agriculture and Construction, and the Convention on Stolen Cultural Property, which are appropriate to Vietnam's areas of interest and orientation for improving its laws.
Mr. Ignacio Tirado expressed his impression with the process of innovation in thinking about law-making and institutional improvement that has been resolutely directed by the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam.
In his role as Secretary General, he affirmed his readiness to promote cooperation with Vietnam in building and perfecting the private legal framework as well as training international legal experts; and suggested that Vietnam consider the possibility of joining the Organization and UNIDROIT documents.

Also on the morning of September 15, the Department of Law and International Treaties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a Seminar on UNIDROIT legal documents. Representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science and Technology, a number of law training institutions and relevant units of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the Seminar.
Delegates had a lively discussion to learn about UNIDROIT's conventions, model laws, legal research as well as propose solutions to promote cooperation between the two sides in the coming time, including the prospect of becoming members of this Organization.
UNIDROIT (International Institute for the Unification of Private Law) is an independent intergovernmental organization based in Rome, Italy. The main objective of the Institute is to study the need and means of modernizing, harmonizing and coordinating private law, especially commercial law between countries and groups of countries. Since its re-establishment (1940) to date, UNIDROIT has 65 member states from five different continents. |
