Vietnam joins global cooperation in robusta coffee breeding

Today, World Coffee Research (WCR) and the Western Highlands Forestry Science Institute (WASI) jointly announced a new partnership aimed at creating improved robusta coffee varieties to ensure long-term Robusta coffee export production.

This partnership marks an exciting step towards accelerating coffee innovations to help Vietnamese farmers improve coffee productivity, quality, climate resilience and pest and disease resistance.

The varieties developed through this collaboration will contribute to WASI’s ongoing efforts to increase sustainable production and support coffee farmers in meeting the challenges of high temperatures and long dry seasons that have impacted production in recent years.

The partnership agreement was announced by WASI Acting Director, Dr. Phan Viet Ha, and WCR Research Director, Dr. Tania Humphrey, at the Asia International Coffee Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
