The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on December 11 that the latest scientific assessments continue to confirm no link between vaccines and autism spectrum disorder. This conclusion is consistent with assessments made more than 20 years ago.
The WHO's Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety reviewed two systematic reviews, encompassing studies published between 2010 and August 2025. These reviews examined both the vaccine class in general and those containing the mercury-based preservative thiomersal.
Some have suggested that thiomersal syndrome may be linked to autism, but scientific studies have repeatedly refuted this view.
According to the committee, the link between vaccines and autism spectrum disorder will only be considered when multiple high-quality studies repeat the same results and demonstrate a clear, statistically significant association between vaccines and the aforementioned health condition.
According to the WHO, of the 31 studies analyzed, 20 found no evidence of a link between vaccines and autism.
Meanwhile, while the committee noted a possible link in the remaining 11 studies, the committee concluded that these studies had significant methodological flaws and a high risk of bias.
Previously, some in the US, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., suggested that childhood vaccines were a cause of autism.
Last March, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it would conduct additional research to assess whether vaccines are linked to autism.
