Thousands of people cleaned up trash on Da Nang beach.
On the morning of October 21st, the Da Nang City Youth Union organized a comprehensive environmental cleanup campaign along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street (in Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu districts) with the participation of 3,000 youth union members. The approximately 6km long beach area of Da Nang Bay was where tens of tons of garbage were washed ashore by waves after the prolonged heavy rains and flooding from October 13th to 17th.
From 6:00 AM on October 21st, volunteers including youth union members, police and military personnel, and high school students were present at the Nguyen Tat Thanh beach area with tools such as rakes, hoes, gloves, etc., to clean up.
Following the recent heavy rains, tons of waste were carried upstream by the Cu De River and through canals and ditches into Da Nang Bay, then washed ashore by the waves, in some places to a depth of 20-30cm. The waste mainly consists of branches, styrofoam, animal carcasses, and plastic waste, scattered along the coastline.
Military forces participated in a general cleanup of Da Nang Bay beaches. By noon on October 21st, an estimated tons of trash had been collected.
Despite the hot weather, the police, military, and youth union members worked diligently to collect garbage in order to quickly restore a clean environment to Da Nang Bay.
Along the coast of Da Nang Bay, volunteers divided themselves into three main areas for cleaning: the intersection of Phan Van Dinh and Nguyen Tat Thanh streets, the beach area near Yen Khe street, and the beach area opposite Ly Thai Tong street.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thao, Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, today the City Youth Union is mobilizing all its resources to clean up Nguyen Tat Thanh beach as quickly as possible. The core force consists of high school youth union members. In addition, there are local youth, other units such as the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the military, the police, and coastal residents.
Waste is collected, loaded onto motorbikes, and transported to designated collection points on the sidewalk of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, where it is then taken to the landfill by environmental company vehicles.
