The past few days, the problem miss heated up again on forums, especially on the evening of August 3, after the Miss Tourism Vietnam contest in Quang Ninh province and Miss Grand Vietnam (Miss Grand Vietnam) in Binh Thuan province, Vietnam had 2 more beauty queens and 6 runners-up.

Not to mention, just one day before, the Miss Universe Vietnam Business 2024 contest held in Binh Thuan province also produced 1 beauty queen and 3 runners-up.

No more trust?

Two articles "In one night, Vietnam had 2 more beauty queens and 6 runners-up" and "Before, I still remembered the names, now I give up because the number of beauty queens is as large as the Yuan army" (both published on Tuoi Tre Online August 4) attracted many comments from readers.

Most readers think "where do so many beauty queens come from?", "anything too much will dilute and lose value," or even "have no value to society."

On a forum, someone commented bluntly: "No one believes in beauty pageants anymore."

Some people even listed the contestants who "failed" in the Miss Vietnam 2020 contest but won the highest titles in different contests.

Among them is Vo Le Que Anh - the name that has been causing a storm on the internet for the past few days when she became Miss Grand Vietnam.

Before coming to this contest, Que Anh was only in the top 40 of the Miss Vietnam 2020 contest.

We know that each contest has its own criteria, there are beauties who are not suitable for this beauty contest but who knows, they may be suitable for another contest. But the fact that beauties "persist" in competing for the crown this year and then competing next year makes many people fed up.

Someone commented: "Except for some beauties who work hard in the community, are loved and stand out like H'Hen Nie, looking back, there are many beauty queens and runners-up who lose their shine after the contest or have lackluster community activities, not like they promised. So what is the need for so many beauty queens and runners-up?"

Not to mention that there have been many suspicions of prize-fixing, prize-buying, prostitution... that have been circulating for a long time, causing many people's trust in beauty contests to decline.

In fact, the police have also broken up many cases of beauty queens selling sex and committing fraud, making the image of beauty queens even uglier.

"Surplus", "devalued"

Communications expert Le Quoc Vinh told Tuoi Tre Online Beauty pageants are now essentially entertainment products. "If there is demand, there will be supply. When supply exceeds demand, it becomes redundant and loses value," he said.

According to Mr. Vinh, in the past when the number of beauty contests was small, people paid more attention to them, even giving them great values as symbols of national beauty.

But "when it develops too much, with too many beauty contests like today, of course it is no longer valued as before."

"Not to mention the quality of the competitions, the quality of the contestants, the meanings of these competitions also overlap, often representing values that are not of great symbolic significance, so the level of appeal decreases," he added.

He shared that according to the law of the market, anything that is redundant and does not meet the expectations and needs of the public will lose market share, lose its position and will be eliminated.

"After a while, the market will self-regulate, retaining competitions - good products, while competitions - products that cannot compete will have to withdraw," he predicted.
