Ba Ria - Vung Tau Border Guard established a specialized working group to combat IUU fishing

Báo điện tử VOVBáo điện tử VOV21/09/2024

According to the Border Guard Command of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, despite the vigorous and coordinated implementation of key and urgent tasks and solutions to combat IUU fishing, there are still some cases of disconnection, inadequate handling of records for fishing vessels that have lost connection or are docked ashore; propaganda work has not been highly effective; and the handling of violations has not been thorough and has not met the requirements for combating IUU fishing…

To address this situation, the Border Guard Command recently directed the Border Guard forces of 28 provinces and cities to establish specialized teams to combat IUU fishing; the Provincial People's Committee also reorganized the Steering Committee for combating IUU fishing and established four verification teams to handle fishing vessels that have lost contact for more than 6 hours but less than 10 days.

Colonel Dang Cao Dat, Commander of the Border Guard of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, said that the European Commission (EC) is expected to conduct its 5th inspection around September or October 2024 on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This is a crucial period for Vietnam to address the EC's warnings in order to have the "yellow card" on its fisheries lifted.

In light of the above situation, the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Provincial Border Guard Command decided to establish a specialized team to combat IUU fishing, headed by the Commander and with the Political Commissar as the permanent Deputy Head, in order to decisively and promptly direct the handling of situations.

As of September 20th, the province has 4,345 fishing vessels, of which units within the Provincial Border Guard have updated the software for "managing and controlling fishing vessels and sending communication messages to vessel owners," reaching 3,519 vessels, or 81%.

Currently, 826 fishing vessels remain unupdated due to some being sold outside the province, sinking, or becoming dilapidated. Regarding "three-no" fishing vessels (no registration, no inspection, no license) in the province, there are 1,140 vessels, of which 15 have had their documents updated, and 575 are in the process of obtaining them.

The Border Guard of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province deployed 3 crews of boats, 3 canoes, and 25 officers to focus on reviewing, verifying, consolidating, and supplementing complete dossiers to definitively resolve cases of fishing vessels violating IUU regulations, resolutely preventing fishing vessels from departing without all necessary documents.
